Which pot to choose for growing Cannabis?
Choosing the right pot size and model is an important aspect of any Cannabis cultivation, whether for medical purposes in a controlled environment or for hemp varieties. Buying the right size pot for Cannabis is not always easy, as it all depends on the configuration of the crop and the purpose for which it is to be used.
Results will inevitably vary, depending on whether you grow a variety in a specific model or pot size rather than another...
Here, the experts at Silent Seeds present a number of different Cannabis growing configurations, varying pot sizes to optimize results.
Growing feminized Cannabis varieties
For the cultivation of feminized Cannabis varieties in a 1m² space, after a germination period in Jiffy 7, we recommend using 3 or 4 L pots for growth, a phase which generally lasts 3 weeks for the vast majority of light-dependent varieties.
For the transition to flowering, 7 L pots will allow your plants to regain their vigor, since the quantity of substrate is almost doubled, offering your plants good development prospects for this period. You'll be able to place a total of 8 to 10 plants in your grow tent.
For a smaller growing space, e.g. 80x80x160 cm, it's generally advisable to use 4 L pots, to limit the height of the plants. Varieties with limited stretch are also recommended.
Growing feminized Cannabis varieties outdoors
For outdoor cultivation of feminized Cannabis varieties, pot sizes of between 20 and 30 L are generally recommended, to obtain plants with sufficient structural development and to ensure high yields worthy of the name.
Cannabis self-cultivation permits often require that the plantation not be visible outside your property. In this case, you can reduce the pot size to between 7 and 15 L, depending on the size of your space, to better control the growth of your plants and stay within legal limits.
Cultivation of automatic Cannabis varieties in a grow tent (1 m2)
Concerning the indoor cultivation of automatic cannabis strains, For a growing cabinet equivalent to 1 m2, we recommend using pots between 7 and 10 L in size, bearing in mind that plants will not be transplanted between growth and flowering.
These pot sizes certainly represent the best compromise in terms of plant quantity/production ratio, as you'll be able to place around 8 to 9 plants in good indoor conditions.
Growing automatic Cannabis varieties outdoors
For growing automatic Cannabis varieties outdoors, larger pots of between 15 and 30 L are available, depending on your ambitions and possibilities.
Some phenotypes of Moby Dick Auto, Critical+2.0 Auto or even Critical Jack Auto, can deliver surprising results in terms of both quality and productivity!
For more discreet cultivation, pots of 7 to 10 L maximum are sufficient to limit plant growth.
Conservation of mother plants
When it comes to storing one or more mother plants, after selecting a phenotype of an outstanding CBD variety for example, we strongly recommend using round pots with a minimum size of 20 L and optimally 30 L. It's essential to choose round pots, so that the roots don't twist together over time.
The size of the pot needs to be significant, as the substrate will be renewed every 6 months or so. The capacity of the pot must therefore be large enough to cope with a long period.
It's also important to respect this criterion, so as not to encourage the accumulation of fertilizer or mineral salts in the substrate, to have good breathing capacity and to ensure the longevity of your precious genetics collection over time.
The conservation or preservation of a collection of precious varieties requires more meticulous care. Watering must be manual and rigorous. It's also important to limit as far as possible the various «stresses» that could harm their general condition.
