Which US rapper talks most about weed?
Cuepoint, a U.S. music webzine, has published a veritable scientific study on its Medium page [FR] : which rapper objectively talks the most about weed ?
On the occasion of the 420 Cuepoint took a closer look at the lyrics of hip-hop's greatest singers. La marijuana is largely part of hip-hop culture, Snoop Dogg in mind. Not a bad idea: he mentions weed in 46,36% of his lyrics. But does D-O-double-G talk about it the most? Cuepoint identified 14 hip-hop artists who talk more about weed than Snoop.

Rappers who rap most about weed
Unsurprisingly, these 14 artists who talk more about weed than Snoop are all known for their marijuana use and smoking videos. Waka Flocka Flame even went so far as to hire someone to roll your blunts !
The bands that talk most about weed include :
- Three 6 Mafia: 117 titles, 54.17% of the total
- Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: 106 titles, 50.24% of the total
- Cypress Hill: 85 tracks, 50.60% of the total
Cuepoint also analyzed the geographic origins of the rappers, compared to the state of the cannabis legalization in their country of origin. This shows that :
- There aren't many rappers who come from States where marijuana is legalized for recreational use, and rappers don't put much weed in their lyrics
- Almost every state where marijuana is legalized for medical use / decriminalized has artists rapping about weed
- The states with the most weed songs, and where marijuana is still illegal, are. Louisiana (1,358 songs), Texas (1,186, but the legalization situation has changed since the study) and Pennsylvania (1,027).
- Tennessee rappers love to talk about weed in their song, although marijuana is still illegal
The study analyzed the lyrics of existing songs on Rap Genius. It's not exhaustive, of course, but fairly representative of the artists' most popular songs. The 12 most frequently used words referring to weed are:
- simply weed
- blunt
- kush, a variety of weed
- chronic, which stands for very high quality weed
- indo, a cross between cannabis sativa and indica which produces bushy weed plants with a high concentration of THC
- haze, a variety of weed (Purple Haze, Blueberry Haze, Pineapple Haze, etc...)
- marijuana
- stoned and stoner
- ganja
- piff, a purple variety of weed
- cannabis
- 420
Finally, it's worth noting that the 2000s were the most prolific in terms of weed songs. It was also the period when Snoop was most active 🙂

indo, wouldn't that be for indoor-grown weed?

Nope, it's a cross between Indonesian indica (hence the indo) and Western sativa. But it's often confused with Indoor.
