Cannabis in Spain: what is the legal status?

In brief In detail Cannabis News

Spain considers the consumption and cultivation of cannabis by adults in a private space to be legal.

The Cannabis Social Clubs (CSC) use the private associative framework to «donate part of the harvest» in exchange for a «contribution to the association's expenses». In this way, club members contribute to the running costs of the association, in exchange for a share in the harvest.

The CSC system also enables the Catalan province to control their development.

Medical cannabis is still banned.

Is cannabis legal in Spain?

Spanish cannabis laws place no limit on the amount you're allowed to possess (unless the authorities have reason to believe you're distributing it). Although public consumption of weed in Spain is technically illegal, use in a private place is an exception. This is the policy behind Cannabis Social Clubs, which distribute cannabis only to their members.

Medical use is not legal in Spain, although the country does produce medical cannabis for export.

In accordance with Spanish drug laws, members of Barcelona's cannabis clubs can purchase cannabis in designated areas. They are not, however, allowed to take it outside the club or consume it outside.
