710: the party of cannabis concentrates
If the 420 is the festival of cannabis in the broadest sense, the 710 is for lovers of concentrates and dabbing. Celebrated on July 10 (7/10 in American date format), 710 has become the rallying symbol of extract culture, as 420 is for the flower.
Why 710?
710 comes from the word OIL, OIL means «oil» in English, read backwards and turned upside down. OIL refers to cannabis concentrates in their liquid and semi-liquid forms: wax, shatter, distillate, live resin. July 10 has thus become the date dedicated to extracts, by direct analogy with April 20 for flowers.
Who invented the 710?
The history of the 710 is harder to trace than that of the 420. The first traces of 710 celebrations date back to 2013, but the term was probably in circulation before that. Some sources indicate that it first appeared on Urban Dictionary in 2010, without yet being clearly associated with cannabis.
From 2011 that the term became widespread in cannabis culture. TaskRok, of the Highly Educated brand, is often cited as one of the first to popularize the term. He claims to have thought of it during a discussion with professionals from Healthstone and BeeHive Oil Clothing. On July 10, 2011, he released an album under the name Task & Linus entitled «The Movement», which contains several references to dabbing including a track called «7:10».
Concentrates celebrate the 710
The 710 celebrates all cannabis extractions and concentrates. Here are the main products of dab culture:
- Shatter Butane or CO2 extracted, translucent amber color, vitreous and brittle texture.
- Wax Waxy, malleable texture, obtained by solvent extraction.
- Budder Creamy like peanut butter, richer in terpenes than shatter.
- Crumble Dry, crumbly texture, easy to dose.
- Rosin Solvent-free concentrate obtained by heat and pressure. Strong herbal taste, much appreciated by purists.
- Kief The most accessible concentrate, made up of sieved trichomes. Commonly called pollen in France.
- Distillate The purest form, reaching 90-99 % of THC or CBD. Clear, odorless and incomparably potent.
- Live resin The plant is frozen immediately after harvesting, without drying or curing, to preserve its full terpene profile.
- Bubble hash hash: solvent-free, ice-water extract. Similar to traditional hash, but with much higher trichome purity.
- Terp sauce golden liquid texture, extremely rich in terpenes, sometimes encrusted with THCA diamonds.
Why are concentrates so popular?
Concentrates offer several advantages over flower consumed in combustion. Firstly, their potency - cannabinoid levels reach 60 to 99 % compared with 15 to 30 % for flower. Secondly, their terpene profile: a good live resin or terp sauce that preserves the terpenes of the living plant develops aromas that are impossible to find in dried flower. Finally, vaporizing concentrates by dabbing eliminates combustion and its associated toxic products.
In countries where cannabis is legal, concentrates allow medical patients to absorb more cannabinoids in less volume, and recreational users to explore a more intense effects profile.
and more nuanced.
Where to buy concentrates legally?
France prohibits the production and consumption of THC concentrates. To discover them legally, there are several possible destinations:
- United States (legalized states): 710 cultivation is fully integrated. Any serious dispensary will carry a complete selection of concentrates at affordable prices. For beginners, start with small doses. Concentrate means a much more powerful product.
- Canada : recreational cannabis has been legal since October 2018, concentrates included, in outlets licensed by each province.
- Netherlands concentrates are technically banned from sale in coffeeshops (classified as «hard drugs»), but some establishments offer them in a tolerated setting.
- Spain Some Cannabis Social Clubs offer concentrates to their members, although the offer remains mainly flower-oriented.
