Terp sauce: the terpene fraction of cannabis sauce
The terp sauce, also known as weed sauce, is a new form of cannabis concentrates. Surpassing the prowess of the live resin, an extraction made from just-harvested plants with incredible aromas. sauce manages to capture even more terpenes.
The terp sauce refers specifically to the liquid, oily and highly aromatic fraction of a concentrate of sauce. This is the HTFSE (High Terpene Full Spectrum Extract), the amber oil that bathes THCA crystals in a jar of sauce. It can contain over 50% of terpenes, compared with 5 to 15% for a conventional BHO.
The first company to publish lab results proving that their extraction contained a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes was Extractioneering, who also coined the term «Full Spectrum Extracts». The exact recipe for their extractions is not known, but live resin is not a step in their process, according to their statements.
Full Spectrum Extracts
Full-spectrum extractions contain the widest range of potentially therapeutic biomolecules, obtained from trichomes of the plant, which contain the cannabinoids and terpenes, and without non-therapeutic molecules (fats and other lipids).
Quite often, extraction manufacturers focus on one cannabinoid in particular, THC or CBD for example. However, research has shown that cannabinoids interact with terpenes, in a combination called entourage effect, and produce more therapeutic effects when combined. Hence the growing interest in full-spectrum extractions on the other side of the Atlantic.
There are also two forms of full-spectrum extraction: HTFSE and HCFSE. The former is higher in terpenes, the latter in cannabinoids, and both have a different appearance.
HTFSE : High Terpene Full Spectrum Extract
According to the inventors of the HTFSE, However, it can only be obtained from dried or curried material. Other companies claim to make it from fresh, just-glazed plants, and therefore from live resin, but the latter often contains only one or two monoterpenes, not the full spectrum.
HTFSE must contain at least 13% of terpenes and no more than 30% for taste reasons, and between 45 and 70% of cannabinoids. Its texture resembles liquid gold.
| Terpene | Dominant aroma | Present in |
|---|---|---|
| Myrcene | Earthy, fruity, mango | OG Kush, Blue Dream |
| Limonene | Citrus, lemon | Sour Diesel, Super Lemon Haze |
| Linalool | Floral, lavender | Amnesia, Do-Si-Dos |
| Caryophyllene | Spicy, pepper | GSC, Rockstar |
| Terpinolene | Floral, piney, fruity | Jack Herer, Dutch Treat |
| Pinene | Pine, fresh | Blue Dream, OG Kush |
HCFSE : High cannabinoid Full Spectrum Extract
HCFSE also resembles liquid gold, but with a twist. white and yellow diamonds inside, which are in fact crystals of THCa. It contains at least 90% of THC + THCa.
What's all the hype about extraction?
While some countries are still struggling to come to terms with cannabis as a mainstream consumer product, the United States has taken the lead in terms of qualitative rather than quantitative consumption (one does not preclude the other).
Consumers used to products, and often with the means, are now turning to healthier consumption methods. This race for’extract quality is the result, with new extraction and ripening methods that produce textures and aromas each crazier than the last. They are then consumed in dab or in pen, two vaporization methods, or integrated into edibles, where cooks can play with the textures, colors and tastes of the ingredients. sauce, Escoffier's proud successors.
How to consume terp sauce ?
Terp sauce is highly volatile Its terpenes evaporate at low temperatures. This is why low temp dab (300-360°C) with carb cap is essential to get the best out of it. A dab that's too hot burns precisely what makes the product so interesting.
