THCA diamonds: cannabis crystals, manufacture and consumption
Diamonds are the crystalline structures that develop in sauce, a cannabis concentrate known for its shiny, runny texture.
What are THCA diamonds?
Let's explain. Visit THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the precursor of THC, the most abundant and intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis.
When exposed to heat, the non-intoxicating THCA transforms into the psychotropic THC, producing the classic cannabis euphoria. Diamonds are another term for the crystalline structures that form in the sauce, a terpene-rich cannabis concentrate with a liquid texture. Put two and two together and you get a term for the THCA-rich crystals that form in the sauce.
The sauce is made using a special closed-loop system which allows the resulting solution to settle under different pressures and temperatures. This environment favours the natural separation of the main cannabinoids, including THCA in diamond form (or THC diamonds as they are sometimes mistakenly called), from the terpene-rich liquid part.
The resulting sauce may contain a mixture of terpene-rich liquid and THCA diamonds. Further processing can also separate the THCA diamonds and refine them into crystalline THCA, a powdered concentrate composed almost exclusively of the cannabinoid acid.

What is diamond mining?
L’diamond mining is an industry term for the process of making THCA diamonds and harvesting them in the sauce. Depending on the size of the cannabinoid crystals and the overall consistency of the sauce, it may be possible to separate the crystals entirely from the concentrate. Ideally, diamond extraction should result in two distinct products: pure crystalline THCA diamonds and a terp sauce containing over 50 % of terpenes and all other extracted cannabinoids.
How are THCA diamonds made?
The manufacture of THCA diamonds is reserved for professionals with specialized equipment and extraction licenses - handling volatile solvents outside regulated laboratories presents serious risks.
Diamonds are produced from extracted cannabis oil cold, from fresh plants. The aim is crucial: to maintain THCA in its acid form throughout the process - because it's THCA, not THC, that crystallizes. If the temperature is too high during extraction, the THCA will crystallize. decarboxyl and crystallization becomes impossible.
The complete process includes the following steps:
1. Cold extraction crude oil is extracted from fresh plants at low temperatures to preserve the THCA.
2. Winterization The oil is mixed with ethanol and placed at low temperature to precipitate lipids, waxes and fats. The mixture is then filtered and passed through a rotary evaporator (rotovap) to remove the ethanol.
3. Pentane purification rotovap: the oil is immersed in a pentane solution to remove any residual plant matter, then rotovapped again.
4. Chromatography The purified oil undergoes a chromatographic process that allows THCA crystals to form under pressure.
5. Drying The diamonds are left to dry for between 3 and 12 days, depending on the desired crystal size.
The result: THCA crystals firing between 95 and 99% of purity, virtually colorless and odorless - the purest form of a cannabinoid ever commercially produced.
The difference between terp sauce and crystalline
Concentrate lovers will be familiar with cartridges sauce, or vape cartridges loaded with high-terpene sauce. Cannabis diamonds can also refer to the crystalline structures that remain after the terp sauce has been removed from the initial sauce mix. These diamonds are usually coated with terp sauce residual. Diamonds can also refer to pure crystalline THCA that has been isolated from refined oil.
The main difference between these types of diamonds is the way they are extracted and processed. Whether presented as a saucy high-terpene extract or packaged as isolated THCA, diamonds are always crystalline structures of pure THCA. Remember, these diamonds may be mistakenly called pure THC, but in reality they are pure THCA.
What THCA diamonds look like
The size and shape of diamonds do not necessarily reflect the quality of the raw materials. Temperature, humidity, chemical impurities and solvents used in the extraction process can all influence diamond size and shape.
Diamonds range in size from very small to large chunks. THCA can crystallize into multiple forms, but only when subjected to variables such as temperature, humidity and chemical impurities. Sterols, lipids and even terpenes can impurify and alter the course of crystallization.
In the same way that chemical variables interfere with sugar crystallization to create molasses, terpenes and other intruding compounds disrupt THCA crystallization to varying degrees, affecting diamond structure. The unique terpene profiles that depend on the cannabis variety used can alter the size and composition of the diamonds created in unrefined cannabis extract.
Final size and shape are also influenced by the solvents used during the extraction process. However, different shapes and sizes do not necessarily mean different levels of purity. A diamond's physical attributes are more a reflection of its path to crystallization than an indicator of its degree of purity.
Do THCA diamonds get you high?
Yes, as long as you heat them up to the cannabinoids. THCA is not intoxicating in itself, but it converts to THC when exposed to heat. When you vaporize THCA diamonds using a dab rig, THCA is transformed into active THC in the vapor of an e-rig or table-top vaporizer. The THC contained in the vapor then binds to the receptors of your body's endocannabinoid system, producing an intoxicating effect.
How to use THCA diamonds
Dabbing with terp sauce the reference method. Sample a quantity of sauce containing both diamonds and terp sauce with a dabber and place on the banger hot. THCA is decarboxyl instantly into heat-active THC, while the terp sauce vaporizes simultaneously. The low temp dab (300-380°C) is essential to preserve the sauce's aromatic profile - too hot a dab burns the terpenes before they can be inhaled.
Diamonds alone Without the terp sauce, pure THCA diamonds are smoked at a slightly higher temperature (380-420°C), without terpene oil to facilitate vaporization. The experience is very potent but aromatically poor - many consumers prefer to reassociate them with terp sauce to recapture the aromas.
Flower topping crumble small diamonds onto flower in a joint or bowl to significantly increase power - simple technique without dab equipment.
Is THCA legal in France?
The legal status of THCA in France is that of cannabis in general: it is classified as a narcotic in the same way as THC. The fact that THCA is not psychoactive in its raw state does not change its legal status - conversion to THC by simple heating places it under the same legal regime. In France, possession of THCA crystals is therefore treated in the same way as possession of THC or cannabis resin.
In the USA, the situation is more complex: in some states, THCA diamonds from hemp (< 0.3% THC by gross weight) circulate legally, exploiting the fact that THCA is not explicitly listed in federal law. This grey area is the subject of an ongoing regulatory debate.
