Crumble cannabis: definition, production and consumption
The crumble, also known as crumble wax or honeycomb wax, is a cannabis concentrate with a dry, crumbly texture that crumbles on handling, like dry cookie crumbs. It's one of the driest extracts on the concentrate market, making it both one of the easiest to dose on flower and one of the least practical to handle on a nail.
Its color ranges from pale yellow to golden amber, depending on the quality of the starting material and the degree of oxidation. Over time, it gradually darkens - a sign of the degradation of terpenes and THC.
What is crumble?
Crumble is a cannabis extract produced using a solvent - mainly butane (BHO), the propane (PHO) or ethanol, combined with heat and pressure. What distinguishes it from other concentrates such as shatter or the budder is not the solvent used but entirely the post-extraction phase crumble is purged with lowest temperature (40-60°C) and for a longer duration than other extracts, which progressively dries out the extract and creates its characteristic crumbly texture.
Its THC is generally between 60 and 90% depending on the quality of the starting material. The low-temperature purging process preserves a high proportion of the terpenes This gives crumble a reputation as a particularly tasty concentrate - often more aromatic than shatter, which is purged at higher temperatures with greater terpene loss.
Crumble vs honeycomb wax These two terms are often used interchangeably, but refer slightly to two different textures. The crumble is the driest, crummiest version - it crumbles on contact. The honeycomb (honeycomb) is slightly less dry, with a visible honeycomb structure that breaks into pieces rather than powder. Both are produced by the same process, the differences being linked to precise purging parameters and cannabis genetics.
Concentrate comparison
| Concentrate | Texture | Handling | Terpenes | THC approx. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crumble | Dry, crumbly | Difficult (spoon) | Very good | 60–90% |
| Budder/Badder | Creamy, buttery | Very easy | Coupons | 60–90% |
| Wax | Waxing, semi-dry | Easy | Coupons | 60–85% |
| Shatter | Stiff, brittle | Less easy | Resources | 70–90% |
| Live resin | Variable | Variable | Excellent | 65–90% |
How is crumble made?
Prior notice The manufacture of solvent-based concentrates should be reserved exclusively for trained and authorized professionals. Butane and propane are highly flammable - handling them without suitable equipment can cause explosions.
The crumble extraction process is identical to that of other BHO/PHO extracts in its initial stages:
- Starting material dried and curdled flowers for a standard crumble, or fresh flowers frozen immediately after harvesting for a version that's just right for you. live resin crumble technically richer in terpenes.
- Solvent extraction the solvent (butane, propane or ethanol) is passed through the plant material in a closed system (closed-loop) to extract cannabinoids and terpenes.
- Separation The plant material is removed, leaving a solvent + cannabinoid solution.
The next step is where the crumble diverges from other concentrates:
- Vacuum oven purging The extract is spread out on a plate and placed in a vacuum oven at 40-60°C - much lower than the 70-90°C used for budder or shatter - for a duration of 24 to 72 hours. The low temperature and long duration gradually dry out the extract without degrading the terpenes. The result is a dry, crumbly texture. Some producers lightly whip the extract before purging to obtain a more airy, honeycombed texture.
How to eat crumble?
In dabbing Crumble: this is the most common way to consume concentrates. The specificity of crumble is that it's better to use an dabber à spoon tip rather than a flat tip - to catch crumbly crumbs without them falling off. Apply the crumble to a nail or a banger heated to 300-400°C for a low temp dab that preserves aromas. A carb cap is recommended for complete vaporization.
Sprinkled on flower crumble: this is where the crumbly texture of crumble becomes an advantage: it's very easy to crumble small quantities onto a bowl or into a joint, without the need for tools. This is the most accessible method of consumption for those without dabbing equipment.
Spray or dab pen crumble: compatible concentrated vaporizers accept crumble, especially models with an open chamber. Some dab pens with quartz chambers are ideal for this texture.
How to store crumble?
Crumble's dry texture makes it more susceptible to degradation than wetter concentrates such as budder. Humidity, oxygen, light and heat are its main enemies - they accelerate oxidation, darken color and degrade THC and terpenes.
Keep the crumble in a hermetically sealed glass or silicone container, Store in a cool, dark place (ideally 10-15°C). The non-stick silicone is particularly practical, as the crumble doesn't stick to the sides, making it easier to remove crumbs. In these conditions, it can be kept for several weeks without any significant loss of quality.
