A type of cannabis concentrate named for its appearance and texture. It has an opaque appearance and a thick, malleable consistency that—surprise, surprise—resembles wax.

What is wax?

Cannabis wax refers to a potent cannabis concentrate that has been agitated during the extraction process, causing the oil to crystallize and solidify. The consistency and texture of wax can range from sticky or creamy—known as budder—to something harder and flaky, known as crumble or honeycomb. High-quality waxes tend to be smoother and have an amber hue.

For cannabis connoisseurs and those looking to experience an intense high with superior flavor, wax can offer a powerful psychoactive experience. With a high concentration of cannabinoids With an average THC content of 60 to 80 %, even a small amount of wax is very effective.

Cannabis wax is usually smoked using a dab rig but it can also be vaporized. It’s a concentrate that’s easy to use and work with. Unlike shatter, it doesn’t break into small, unusable pieces, and it’s firmer than oil, which can be difficult to keep on a dab nail.

How is wax made?

Wax is a type of butane hash oil (BHO). Butane gas is used as a solvent to extract the main cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis flowers or from trim. Butane is highly flammable and unstable, and the risk of butane explosions makes amateur extraction dangerous.

Commercial cannabis extraction facilities use closed-loop equipment to safely extract cannabis oil. Wax is produced by placing cannabis flowers and trimmings into tubes and then flooding them with butane. The butane separates the resin (the desirable part of the plant) from the raw plant material. After several stages of heating, condensation, and vacuum purging, the result is a sticky cannabis concentrate that cools and hardens into a waxy substance.

How do you use wax?

Dab devices can make it easier to use wax while allowing the user to properly activate the cannabinoids and terpenes. That said, there are many ways to smoke wax.

Dab devices and oil devices

Consumers most often smoke wax using a dab rig or an oil rig, as these allow the smoker to feel the effects almost immediately. These devices are similar to bongs but have been designed specifically for use with wax or concentrates.

Wax requires much higher temperatures than regular flower to burn. To dab wax, a small blowtorch is used to heat the small surface called the nail to the desired temperature. When the nail is ready, a ball of wax can be picked up using the dabbing tool and spread around the nail.

Heat-resistant materials, such as quartz or titanium, are used to make the nail and the dab tool, or dabber. The wax vaporizes on the hot surface of the nail while the user inhales the vapor through the mouthpiece.

Some vapers also choose to use a carburetor cap. The cap regulates the airflow and vaporizes the wax at a much lower temperature. When you’re ready to inhale, lift the cap and inhale the vapor from the device.

Dab devices are also available in electronic versions, which make it easier to control and regulate the temperature.

Wax pens

Vaping wax is similar to vaping flower. Although vaping wax requires higher temperatures than those used for flower, experts recommend avoiding overheating. Higher temperatures tend to produce vapors with a slightly stronger taste, while lower temperatures produce gentle clouds of vapor with purer, milder flavors.

To smoke wax, place a small spoonful of wax in the vaporizer’s heating chamber or on the heating coils. Then, turn on the vaporizer, heat it to the desired temperature, and inhale the vapor produced inside the device.

Twax Seals

Wax is versatile enough to be consumed in other ways. You can roll a small ball of wax into a joint, spliff, or blunt, which makes the joint burn more slowly and gives it a more potent effect. This is called a “twax” joint, which is popular among those who want to try an old-school experience with a more intense effect.

You can also smoke weed wax by:

  • By using a nectar collector or a portable dab machine
  • By combining it with flour in a bong
  • Using a dab knife

How is wax different from other concentrates?

The cannabis concentrate family is broad and includes shatter, wax, resin, rosin, sugar, sauce, hash, and oil. All concentrates are extracts that have been processed to concentrate the plant’s potency, offering a more intense experience than dried cannabis flowers.

What sets cannabis concentrates apart is the product’s texture and viscosity. Cannabis wax is opaque and malleable, while shatter is shiny, brittle, and translucent. However, the potency, aroma, and flavor profiles of waxes can be identical to those of shatter or oil. The consistency of wax is not necessarily an indicator of flavor or THC content.

Variations in post-extraction processing result in these different consistencies. Wax is formed through whipping. Aggressive whipping results in a crumbly texture, while brief whipping produces a creamy budder. Wax has a definite advantage over other concentrates: it is easy to use, allowing beginners to measure out and smoke it with ease.
