Czech Economic Council calls for legal cannabis market
The National Economic Council of the Czech Republic, known as NERV, has recommended that its government establish a regulated cannabis market in order to stimulate economic growth. NERV is an independent advisory body that issues recommendations on economic reforms, much like our The Economic Analysis Council, which made the same recommendation.
NERV's Position on the Legalization of Cannabis
The cannabis regulation measure is one of the 37 recommendations made by the economic organization to stimulate the country's economic growth.
«Criminal penalties and sentencing guidelines should be adjusted. In the area of drug policy, a legal and regulated cannabis market should be established,» the NERV stated in its recommendation.
In January, experts expected that the Czech government unveils a cannabis bill that would include a regulated cannabis market. Instead, he introduced a bill on cannabis which did not include the retail sale of cannabis, as had previously been considered.
The bill would authorize the possession of cannabis, home cultivation, and the establishment of Cannabis Social Clubs, similar to the’the approach taken by Germany and Malta.
Political Landscape and Legislative Process
The Czech Republic's coalition government is made up of five political parties that span the entire political spectrum, from liberal to conservative. The Coalition members are currently negotiating A bill that has been in the works since last November. No date has been set for the bill’s publication.
However, the next Czech parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 2025, so a bill would likely be introduced in Parliament in 2024.
