Czech President continues to advocate strict regulation of cannabis
Last week, on Wednesday, March 6, Czech President Petr Pavel addressed the citizens of Kladno. During the conversation, the deputy mayor asked him for his position on the legalization of cannabis. If Newsweed readers already know the answer, the president’s remark surprised quite a few people in the room. Lukas Hurt, a Czech journalist specializing in cannabis, transcribed the conversation on LinkedIn, which was picked up by CannabisIndustry.
In Support of Strict Regulation of Cannabis
President Pavel explained that he was not in favor of full legalization without any regulation or analysis. He raised the broader issue of drug addiction and argued that the harm caused by approved and even advertised drugs is often greater than that caused by cannabis use.
The president highlighted the fact that many prisoners are incarcerated for relatively minor cannabis-related offenses. He emphasized that sentences are often disproportionate and that this leads to overcrowded prisons.
Pavel called for a rethinking of criminal policy regarding cannabis, emphasizing that legalization does not mean anarchy, but rather control.
The Need for Regulation: Oversight in Response to the Growing Threat Among Young People
President Pavel pointed out that cannabis is widespread on the black market, even among elementary school children.
He also emphasized the importance of regulation in limiting access to cannabis and ensuring product quality. Mr. Pavel cited successful models in other countries, such as certain states in the United States, where consumers can choose products based on the expected effects.
In his conclusion, the president acknowledged that legalizing cannabis was not an ideal solution, but he believed it was the lesser of two evils compared to prohibition.
The The Czech Republic is in the process of legalizing cannabis. The latest version of the cannabis regulation bill, however, abandoned the creation of a commercial, regulated cannabis market, similar to the first phase of legalization in Germany.
