The Smoker's Museum: immersion in smoke paradise
The Museum of Smoking is a private museum located in the 11th arrondissement.e district of Paris. It was founded in 2001 by Michka Seeliger-Chatelain and Tigrane Hadengue, then bought in 2012 by plant and vaporizer enthusiasts. Today, it brings together a head shop (a genuine store dedicated to plant lovers) and a museum section with a collection of more or less famous works of art, objects, and plants related to tobacco.
This museum aims «to inform about the act of smoking and smoked plants.» It presents the evolution of this ancestral practice, the act of smoking, through the centuries. From Native Americans to the present day, by way of Hindu sages: smoking objects from different eras around the world trace the «guilty pleasure» of tobacco. Visitors can admire all the essential accessories for smokers: old and new pipes, peace pipes, cigarettes (including Gainsbourg's Gitanes), snuff boxes, cigars, tobacco samples, and vaporizers.
One can also see paintings and engravings by Paul Gavarni and Gérôme, ranging from the 16th century Baroque period to contemporary times. The bookstore, for its part, stocks books on tobacco in French, as well as in English and Spanish.
In addition to being a true haven for the art of smoking, the museum is also a very well-stocked shop. You can find smoking and ex-smoking accessories (bongs, grinders, papers, etc.), as well as electronic cigarettes and a very wide selection of vaporizers. With dozens of different models, it is therefore the best shop for buy a bong or a vaporizer in Paris.
Smoking kills, but it won't kill you to pay a short visit! Smoker or not, you can take an afternoon to discover and admire the collections dedicated to this ancestral practice where «smoke keeps its mystery.» Museum admission is €2, and access to the Headshop/bookstore/shop is free.
