The first cannabis drive-in ready to open in the U.S.
For once, it's safe to say that the States have copied the idea. Last October, a McDonald's near Lyon made headlines for supplying its customers with BigMac and Cannabis. The idea has now crossed the Atlantic to Oregon.
According to local sources, entrepreneurs in Gold Beach, a small town in Oregon, are planning to open a new dispensary this spring that will offer what its owners are calling the country's first cannabis drive-in.
«I've seen the business plan, I've met the investors, and I believe this project is going to be a value-add for the community,» Julie Schmelzer, Curry Region's Director of Economic Development, told reporters.
«Their expansion plans and other developments can help Gold Beach and the Southwest Coast become a destination for people interested in green tourism, of which we are happy to be a part.».
In keeping with cannabis culture, the owners plan to open on April 20, the anniversary of the 420. For them, the drive-in is part of a larger effort to make cannabis more accessible to as many people as possible.
The owners also open their dispensary in a building adjacent to the Curry General Hospital. «We want to make sure that people have a natural alternative to synthetic painkillers. We also strongly believe that a reliable dispensary can help keep the black market off the streets, and reduce crime.».
Since the recreational cannabis fully legalized, Oregon has produced some pretty huge statistics, both in terms of sales in dispensaries and the taxes generated by these sales, which go into the state coffers.
A more regulated market, particularly with regard to pesticide control, and a new tax on 25% sales could bring some significant changes to Oregon for 2016.
