Arte looks at cannabis trafficking in new series

This September, Arte begins shooting a new series of 6 52-minute episodes. Its theme: cannabis trafficking, from producer to consumer.

Cannabis, as it's called, will be the very first series directed by Lucie Borleteau, already the director of several short films and «Fidelio, l'Odyssé d'Alice», a film about the desire to live life to the full while controlling one's destiny. Although cannabis plays an important part in the series' story, we'll mainly be following the destinies of characters intertwined in three countries: the Rif in Morocco, Marbella in Spain and the island of France.

Libération recently devoted an article to this series The screenplay should focus more on the kingpins and drug barons than on the police, leaving plenty of room for shock scenes«.

Lucie Borleteau cites the inspirations of The Wire in writing, especially at the beginning of the process. But it clearly won't be a French remake of David Simon's series.

On the casting front, the presence of a number of actors has already been confirmed. Familiar faces include Christophe Paou (L'Inconnu du lac) and Kate Moran (Les rencontres d'après minuit).

Filming will take place from September to December, for a coming soon which we'll be sure to mention.
