Netflix develops cannabis strains in the image of its popular series

It's Netflix's turn to enter the booming cannabis industry! (At least for a weekend). Indeed, the streaming giant has just released some cannabis strains. Called «The Netflix Collection», this selection of strains is directly inspired by their most popular TV series: Orange Is The New Black, Bojack Horseman or even Arrested Development.

During the weekend of August 25-27, 2017, the American streaming giant collaborated with a dispensary in therapeutic cannabis, Alternative Herbal Health Services based in West Hollywood. Californians were able to purchase jars of cannabis bearing the effigy of their favorite series. Only customers with a medical prescription card were able to obtain this selection of cannabis strains, with recreational cannabis sales only beginning in January 2018.

Among the choices on offer is the Poussey Riot variety, one of the protagonists of the series Orange is the New Black. This variety is inspired by the character and «snatches, makes stupid jokes». There's also a variety inspired by the cannibal comedy series Santa Clarita Diet that will «really increase your appetite».

«Each cannabis strain has been grown with a specific series in mind and designed to accompany each title according to its tone. For example, light series will have more of an indica dominance, while somewhat dramatic series will have cannabis sativa strains, to enhance the more powerful scenes,» said the American giant in a press release.

There's no need to buy a plane ticket to get a taste of your very own weed series, it was an ephemeral sale. Under U.S. federal law, Netflix will not benefit financially from these sales. They were mainly part of a promo for the release of Disjointed, a new series focusing on a manager of a medical cannabis dispensary «Ruth's Alternative Caring» in Los Angeles.
