Whoopi Goldberg founds a medical cannabis company for women
Whoopi Goldberg will lend her name and financial backing to a new line of medical cannabis products specifically targeting women.
Goldberg, who speaks openly about his own cannabis use, is the latest celebrity to enter the US cannabis market. Bob Marley's family recently negotiated a partnership with a company to produce Marley Natural cannabis brand, and Snoop Dogg launched Leafs, her own varieties of weed. Goldberg did not announce how much she was investing in «Whoopi & Maya», but said she had raised funds from friends and family, and would act as president.
For the time being, the company will offer four products: a balm, a tincture (alcohol infused with cannabis), liquid chocolate and bath salts. All these products are infused with cannabis and aim to reduce the pain and cramps caused by menstruation or premenstrual syndrome.

The balm and bath salts have no psychoactive effects, and the cocoa can be declined in a version containing only CBD, which acts on mood and can help manage anxiety or depression, in addition to its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to cannabis, their products contain several other natural anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic components, such as willow and raspberry.
Products sold under the «Whoopi & Maya» brand will be available from April in California for those with a medical cannabis card.
By launching in California, Goldberg and her partner Maya Elisabeth are entering one of the largest cannabis markets, with sales reaching $2.7 billion in 2015. They will also become part of one of the fastest-growing industries in the US, with global sales of 5.7 billion. of $.
In November, Californians will be asked to vote on whether to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. In most cases, the products sold for medical and recreational use are identical; the only difference being the need for a doctor's prescription to have access to them.
If the law passes, the cannabis market in California is set to grow massively. And Whoopi & Maya are counting on it. Their niche, if half the population can be called a niche, is ready for their product. Maya Elisabeth says women have been treating themselves with herbs for generations, and strongly believes her cannabis products are no different.
Whoopi Goldberg admits that smoking cannabis or drinking cannabis-infused tea has helped her control her own cramps, and that she now uses a vaporizer with cannabis oil to combat her glaucoma-related headaches. She says she's not interested in creating a recreational brand that would sell joints to people wanting to get high.
«I had to help people if I wanted to get involved in this business,» she finally says. «Our products don't smell like cannabis. It's woody, sweet and sexy!».
