Candies, toothpicks, pet gels - these products are all made from cannabis.
And you'll be hard-pressed to find them in France. On the other hand countries or states that have legalized cannabis are constantly inventing new cannabis-based products. Here's a selection of 6 products you wouldn't suspect at first glance.
Skin patch
For people who can't or don't like to smoke, Mary's Medicinal has a solution. Their cannabis-infused patch delivers THC through the skin and directly into the bloodstream.
The patch provides an absorption of almost 100%, compared with edibles (space food) with an absorption rate of between 30 and 70%, according to communications director Graham Sorkin.
Each patch costs 15$ and works for 12 hours.
Based in Denver, Mary's Medicinal has sold over 1 million patches since its launch in 2013. The patches are available in dispensaries where cannabis is legal for medical or recreational use.
Toothpicks
Kush Creams' cannabis-infused toothpicks have been selling very well. Made from bamboo, they are intended for both medical and recreational consumers.
«Since we launched them, we've been constantly out of stock,» says CEO and designer Megan Schwarting.
A pack of 20 Walking sticks costs 25$ and contains 1g of concentrated cannabis.
«Using a toothpick is the equivalent of smoking a small joint,» says Schwarting. «You can use them discreetly».
For the moment, these toothpicks are only available in Seattle.
Cotton candy
Every child loves cotton candy. But Giselle Hall has developed a version for adults.
This is the latest product in her range of cannabis-infused sweets since she launched Kandy Care in 2011.
«My mother needed cannabis the majority of her life for medical reasons,» says Hall. And when another 76-year-old acquaintance of hers with throat cancer was no longer able to smoke cannabis, Hall decided to create an alternative.
«I decided to make candy that he could suck on, and the THC was easily absorbed by the salivary glands».
The candies and other lollipops, intended for medical use, all come from an old family recipe. So, 2 years later, she added some space cotton candy.
Kandy Care is only available in California. Giselle Hall will soon be working on sugar-free cannabis candies for diabetics.
Gel for pets
Cannabis for animals sounds crazy, but there's a market for it.
Mary's Medicinal (see patches above) has extended its cannabis products for pets with a pain-relieving gel. The gel can be used to soothe muscle aches or arthritis-related pain, especially for older dogs.
The gel contains no THC. It is infused with CBD (cannabidiol), one of cannabis' non-intoxicating compounds. So there's no risk of your dog chasing imaginary rabbits.
The gel is applied via a pencil and is sold as 40$. Each dose releases 1mg of gel, which can then be applied to a specific area. The pencil contains 50 doses.
As this product contains no THC, it is available in all pet stores in the USA. In the near future, it should also be available in more conventional outlets.
Tea and coffee
Mad Hatter Coffee & Tea Co. has created over 30 different coffees and teas, all infused with cannabis.
The two creators, Thomas and Jill, husband and wife, started these drinks in 1980. «We were artists and had a lot of friends who were suffering, some dying of AIDS,» says Thomas. Cannabis-infused tea helped their friends regain their appetite and get rid of nausea.
When the US began legalizing cannabis, the couple decided to market the drinks, initially via dispensaries.
Thomas says THC levels in beverages vary according to what is allowed in each state.
Toothpaste and mouthwash
If you're suffering from toothache, wouldn't it be nice to relieve it right in your mouth? These mouthwashes and toothpastes might do the trick.
Axim Biotechnologies has developed a range of cannabis-based oral products containing CBG (cannabigerol), a non-psychoactive cannabis compound.
CBG is known to relieve pain and have anti-bacterial properties. The products, which will be sold at 16$, are expected to hit the market in 2017.
