Full spectrum CBD oil: definition, entourage effect and how to choose well

The term «full spectrum» is one of the most widely used, and most misunderstood, in the CBD market. Not all products that use this term are created equal, and understanding what it really means allows you to make informed choices rather than relying on a marketing argument.

What is a full-spectrum CBD oil?

A full-spectrum CBD oil (full spectrum is a hemp plant extract that retains all the compounds naturally present in the plant at the time of extraction:

  • The CBD (cannabidiol): the dominant cannabinoid
  • Visit minor cannabinoids CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDA, CBGA and others in traces
  • Visit terpenes aromatic compounds such as myrcene, limonene, linalool and beta-caryophyllene
  • Visit flavonoids polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant properties
  • From traces of THC less than 0.3% in France, no psychoactive effect at these concentrations

It is this preservation of all compounds that distinguishes the full spectrum from the other two major categories of CBD oils: the broad spectrum from which THC has been removed, and the’CBD isolate which contains only pure cannabidiol.

The entourage effect: why the full spectrum acts differently

The main interest of the full spectrum lies in the so-called’entourage effect, the principle that cannabis compounds are more effective together than individually.

This principle was formalized by Prof. Raphaël Mechoulam in the 1990s, after observing that whole-plant extracts produced superior therapeutic effects to isolated CBD or THC. More recent studies have confirmed this synergy on several fronts.

Terpenes reinforce cannabinoid effects. Linalool (also present in lavender) amplifies CBD's anxiolytic effects. Myrcene potentiates the sedative and relaxing effect. Beta-caryophyllene acts directly on anti-inflammatory CB2 receptors. It is the only terpene known to interact directly with the endocannabinoid system.

Minor cannabinoids complement CBD. CBG reinforces the action on anxiety and inflammation. CBN contributes to sedative effects at higher doses. CBC has shown antidepressant properties in preclinical studies.

Trace THC plays a modulating role. Even at 0.3%, residual THC contributes to the entourage effect by partially activating CB1 receptors, enough to potentiate the effects of CBD without producing a psychoactive effect.

In practice, this means that a full spectrum oil with 10% CBD may produce more pronounced effects than a 20% isolate in some users, and CBD concentration is not the only relevant parameter.

Full spectrum, broad spectrum or isolate: how to choose?

The right format depends on your profile and usage. Here's a decision chart:

Situation Recommended format Reason
General well-being, anxiety, sleep Full spectrum Maximum entourage effect
Wish for 0% THC absolute (sports, professional test) Isolat or certified broad spectrum No THC-related risks
First CBD experience, sensitive profile Broad spectrum THC-free entourage effect
Precise cosmetic or food use Isolat Neutrality, controlled dosage
Chronic pain or inflammation Full spectrum Cannabinoid + terpene synergy

For athletes subject to doping controls or persons likely to undergo a saliva roadside test, the full spectrum is not available. not the right choice. See our guide to CBD and screening tests.

How to recognize a real quality full spectrum oil

The term «full spectrum» is not regulated. Any manufacturer can use it on their product. To verify the reality of a full spectrum oil, two elements are essential:

COA (Certificate of Analysis)

This is the certificate of analysis from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory, on a batch-by-batch basis. A COA voucher must mention :

  • Exact CBD content (in mg/ml or %)
  • Presence and levels of minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC...)
  • THC content (below 0.3% for French legality)
  • Absence of contaminants: pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, mycotoxins

A product sold as «full spectrum» without an accessible COA or with a COA mentioning only CBD is suspect. A true full-spectrum product by definition contains other measurable cannabinoids.

The extraction method

Extraction with Supercritical CO2 is the reference method for quality full spectrum oils. It preserves fragile terpenes and cannabinoids without leaving chemical residues. Oil extracted with cheap butane or ethanol will be less faithful to the original plant profile.

Signs of a mediocre product

  • No COA available or COA not dated
  • COA from a non-accredited laboratory
  • Cannabinoid content identical in all batches (indicative of reconstituted oil, not real extract)
  • Abnormally low price for the concentration displayed
  • Explicit health claims on packaging, prohibited in France

Full spectrum limits to be aware of

Residual THC and screening tests. Legal traces of THC (< 0.3%) produce no psychoactive effect, but can theoretically trigger a positive saliva or urine test in high doses or with mislabeled products. For frequent drivers, sports enthusiasts or people subject to professional testing, broad spectrum or certified 0% THC isolate remains the risk-free option.

Batch-to-batch variability. Unlike an isolate, whose composition is stable, a full spectrum extract varies according to hemp variety, season and growing conditions. This is a quality (natural profile faithful to the plant) and a limitation (less standardization between batches).

The strong taste. Full spectrum oils have a more pronounced herbaceous, earthy taste than isolate-based oils. This is a sign of a good terpene content, which some people like, others not so much.

Frequently asked questions

Does full spectrum CBD oil give you a high? No. Traces of THC (< 0.3%) in French legal full spectrum oil are well below the threshold required for a psychoactive effect. See our article on effects of CBD.

Full spectrum and hemp oil, are they the same thing? No. The’edible hemp oil is cold-pressed from the seeds and contains no significant CBD. A full spectrum CBD oil is extracted from hemp flowers and leaves. Both may be labelled «hemp oil». Always check the CBD content in mg.

Do I need a prescription to buy full spectrum CBD oil in France? No. Full spectrum CBD oils derived from hemp and containing less than 0.3% THC are sold over the counter in France, in specialist stores and online.

Is full spectrum better than broad spectrum? Not necessarily. It depends on the user's profile and constraints. Full spectrum maximizes the entourage effect. Broad spectrum offers a similar effect without the risk of THC traces. See our comparison full spectrum vs. isolate.
