What does CBD do?

CBD doesn't get you high. That's often the first thing new consumers want to know, and the answer is clear: CBD is not a drug. cannabidiol is not psychotropic in the intoxicating sense of the word. But to say it «does nothing» would be equally inaccurate. CBD produces real, documented effects, which vary according to dose, format, individual profile and context of use. Here's what we really know.

How a CBD consumer really feels

The effects most frequently reported by CBD users are a feeling of physical and mental relaxation without alteration of consciousness, a voltage reduction and a calming mental agitation,The difficulty of «switching off» the flow of thoughts, especially in the evening.

It's not euphoria, nor is it marked sedation. Most users describe the effect as muted background noise (stress, tension, discomfort) rather than an altered state. In moderate doses, CBD does not impair cognition or alertness.

These effects are highly dependent on several variables:

  • The dose At low doses (10-25 mg), the effect is slight and often imperceptible to beginners. At higher doses (50-150 mg), the relaxing effects are clearer.
  • The format A sublingual oil takes effect in 15 to 30 minutes. A capsule takes 45 to 90 minutes. A vaporized flower works in a few minutes, but the effect lasts less time.
  • Individual profile Metabolism, weight, sensitivity of the endocannabinoid system, genetics: two people taking the same dose of the same product can have very different experiences.
  • Background CBD often works best when given time to settle into a regular routine, rather than as a one-off.

How CBD affects the body: the mechanisms

The endocannabinoid system

To understand the effects of CBD, we need to start with the endocannabinoid system (SEC), a network of receptors, natural endocannabinoids and enzymes present throughout the body. This system regulates many vital functions: mood, sleep, pain, appetite, immune response, stress response.

Unlike THC, which directly activates the brain's CB1 receptors, producing the well-known psychoactive effects, CBD does not activate these receptors. Instead, it acts as a modulator: it inhibits the FAAH enzyme that degrades anandamide (a natural endocannabinoid), thereby increasing its availability. It also interacts with a dozen other targets in the brain, which explains the diversity of its effects.

Other courses of action

Beyond the SEC, CBD acts via several complementary mechanisms:

5-HT1A (serotonin) receptors CBD binds to receptors involved in regulating mood, anxiety and sleep. This is probably the main route of its anxiolytic effects.

TRPV1 receptors These receptors play a role in the perception of pain and inflammation. CBD activates them, contributing to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Inhibition of adenosine reuptake CBD increases the extracellular availability of adenosine, potentiating natural sleep pressure, which partly explains its sleep-inducing effects at high doses.

Modulation of the HPA axis CBD attenuates the response to the stress hormone cortisol, reducing the nervous system hyperactivation associated with chronic stress.

Effects according to use: what studies document

It is important to distinguish between effects felt, What users describe documented therapeutic effects clinical research. The two do not always overlap.

Anxiety and stress

This is the indication for which the data is strongest. A 2019 study in the Permanent Newspaper reports a reduction in anxiety in 79% patients after one month at 25 mg/day. Randomized studies show that at higher doses (300-600 mg), CBD significantly reduces acute situational anxiety. For chronic anxiety, the effects build over four to six weeks of regular use. See our guide to CBD and anxiety.

Sleep

CBD doesn't work like a conventional sleeping pill. It improves sleep primarily by acting on its causes (anxiety, stress, pain) rather than directly inducing sleep. At high doses (160 mg and over), a direct sedative effect has been observed in subjects suffering from insomnia. At low doses, it can, on the contrary, slightly stimulate wakefulness. See our complete guide to CBD and sleep.

Pain and inflammation

CBD inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines and acts on TRPV1 receptors involved in pain transmission. The effects have been documented for chronic neuropathic and inflammatory pain. For acute post-exertion pain, human data remain limited, but the mechanisms are consistent with feedback from athletes.

Epilepsy

This is the most clinically established indication. L’Epidyolex, CBD-based medication approved in Europe, is prescribed for severe forms of childhood epilepsy resistant to conventional treatments (Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome). This is the only indication for which CBD has marketing authorization.

Other effects: caution with claims

Potential effects are being studied for many other conditions: Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, acne, addiction. Biological mechanisms are often coherent, but human clinical evidence remains preliminary for the most part. OFDT and WHO agree that the safety profile of CBD is favorable, but that evidence of efficacy remains insufficient for many indications beyond epilepsy and anxiety.

Surrounding effect: why full spectrum acts differently from isolate

A 99% pure CBD isolate and a full spectrum oil do not produce exactly the same effects, even at equivalent doses of CBD. This is called’entourage effect Other plant compounds (minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC), terpenes, flavonoids) act synergistically with CBD, potentiating its effects.

Linalool (terpene with anxiolytic properties), myrcene (sedative), beta-caryophyllene (anti-inflammatory via CB2 receptors) all contribute to modulating the experience. That's why clinical studies conducted with CBD isolate don't necessarily reflect what a full spectrum flower or oil user experiences.

In practice: for an anxiolytic or sedative effect, a full or broad spectrum tends to be more effective than an isolate. For targeted use without any THC risk (sportsmen, drivers, professional tests), isolate or broad spectrum certified 0% THC is preferable.

What CBD does not do

To avoid disappointment, here are some useful clarifications:

CBD doesn't make you high,Even at very high doses, there is no intoxicating effect or modification of sensory perception comparable to THC.

CBD has no significant immediate effect for everyone, between 20 and 30% of users experience no significant effect, whatever the dose. Genetic variations in the endocannabinoid system partly explain these differences.

CBD non-addictive, l’WHO concluded in 2017 that it has no potential for abuse or physical dependence.

CBD does not replace medical treatment,For any diagnosed clinical disorder, it remains a possible complement, not an alternative, to medical treatment.

Possible side effects

CBD is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects at usual doses are: slight drowsiness, dry mouth, minor digestive disorders (diarrhea, nausea), especially at the start of use. These effects tend to disappear with dose adjustment.

Note: CBD inhibits hepatic cytochrome P450, involved in the metabolism of many drugs. If you are taking medication, consult a doctor before introducing CBD. See our guide to CBD and drug interactions.
