33 million Americans use cannabis regularly
A new Gallup poll shows that 33 million Americans use cannabis regularly (more than twice a week). For the first time, the poll exceeds 10% of the population.
Since 2013, the number of people declaring themselves to be cannabis smokers has risen from 7% to 13 %. And this numerical increase affects all strata of society.
The polling institute based its findings on an experimental panel of 1,000 people aged 18 or over in the 50 federal states. We note that West Coast smokes much more than in the East, mainly because of the cannabis legalization in Colorado, in Oregon and probably soon in California.
The phenomenon mainly affects the younger generation. 20% of 18-29 year-olds use cannabis regularly. Paradoxically, young people smoke more regularly, but only 38 % of them have ever tried it. Whereas half of the older generation, aged 30 to 64, had tried the psychoactive in their lives.
Increasing tolerance
Polls showing an increase in cannabis tolerance of Americans are multiplying. This year 54 % of Americans said they were in favor of full legalization of cannabis.
Even more surprisingly, 90 % of those polled said they were in favor of medical cannabis treatments. What's more, support for medical cannabis did not differ between Republicans and Democrats. The subject remains sensitive, to say the least, in the run-up to the presidential election. Nor Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump are taking a stand on cannabis. The Democratic candidate wants to enact research and advocates «wait and see». Donald Trump gives him the cold shoulder on the subject and leave it to the citizens.
The land of prohibition is turning its back, and its population is becoming increasingly accustomed to cannabis smokers.
