The tobacco and alcohol industries take a very dim view of the gradual legalization of cannabis in the United States. Cannabis is a new competitor on the drug market, but above all, people smoke fewer cigarettes and drink less alcohol when they have consumed cannabis.

Alcohol and cannabis don't mix

Wikileaks has uncovered links between the liquor lobby Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America and the Democratic convention. Lobbyists allegedly backed certain delegates to prevent Bernie Sanders from being nominated as a candidate during the primary. The only candidate who wanted to legalize on a national level lost the primary race.

In the emails revealed by Wikileaks, the liquor lobby wanted Democrats to: «adopt measures and regulations to protect the public from cannabis abuse and misuse».

This lobby was also at the origin of a controversy about dangers of cannabis behind the wheel. He argued that cannabis consumption increased the probability of a fatal accident. True, cannabis multiplies the chances of an accident by 3, but alcohol multiplies them by 8. The lobby wanted zero tolerance for drivers on THC. The laws on maximum THC levels behind the wheel have not changed.
