U.S. Senate legalizes hemp cultivation
The U.S. Senate approved the commercial cultivation of hemp by a vote of 86 to 11, ending decades of federal prohibition.
Legislation focused on agriculture and food policy renews agricultural programs such as crop insurance and land conservation, and also includes provisions allowing businesses to grow, process, and sell industrial hemp.
«American consumers purchase hundreds of millions of products each year that contain hemp,» explained Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader. «But because of outdated federal regulations that do not sufficiently distinguish this industrial crop from its illicit cousin, American farmers have largely been unable to meet this demand on their own. Consumers had no choice but to buy products containing hemp imported from crops grown abroad.»
The Bill to Legalize Industrial Hemp had been filed earlier this year, with bipartisan support.
