Reefer Madness, the cannabis fragrance line
Reefer Madness is the new collection from the American brand Xyrena. Created by American singer Killian Wells, the Reefer Madness collection features three fragrances made with Indian hemp.
Killian Wells hated the smell of weed until he visited a dispensary in Los Angeles. «I didn’t know that some strains smelled so good; I knew right away that you could do a lot just by fine-tuning the aromas.»
The former New York pop singer ventured into the fragrance industry in 2015 with his brand, Xyrena. After visiting the dispensary, he had the brainwave to create a weed-scented perfume. So he launched the collection Reefer Madness In a nod to the 1936 Prohibition-era film of the same name, the term reefer referring to a joint.
Three different scents
An innovative idea, since no one in the legal cannabis market had thought of it before. The fragrances are not extracted from cannabis plants. He makes his fragrances from synthetic oils and natural terpenes as close as possible to the smells of the’OG Kush, the Blue Dream and Space Cake. For Blue Dream, he adds the terpenes pinene and caryophyllene, as well as the terpene alcohol linalool, to his chemical oils.
According to its creator, the scent is described as «a sweet blueberry aroma with just a hint of skunk ».
The OG Kush strain contains limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, and cedrene. Apparently, the "space cake" scent is a mix of a bakery and the coffeeshop. The fragrances are available starting at 74$.
Wells is a passionate perfumer who seeks to set himself apart from the major brands. In his view, «the industry is corrupt; it brings no innovation.» It’s worth noting, however, that this same Wells used to sell fragrances with scents «nothing» at $500.
«People will love the smell of cannabis, especially before it burns, because you can smell the natural terpenes,» said Olivia Mannix, founder and CEO of Cannabrand. At this time, the Reefer Madness brand is not available in perfume stores. The fragrances are available for purchase at the website of the brand.
