Aurora Cannabis Doubles Its Production Capacity in Germany
Canadian cannabis producer Aurora Cannabis has completed a major expansion project for its medical cannabis production facility in Leuna, Germany. Announced on October 8, 2026, this investment is expected to enable us to more than double the site's annual cannabis flower production.
Renamed Aurora Horizon, the revamped website combines Canadian expertise in cultivation, exclusive varieties, and pharmaceutical manufacturing standards.
Aurora Horizon Boosts Domestic Cannabis Production in Germany
Located in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, Aurora Horizon is one of only three medical cannabis cultivation sites in Germany. This expansion introduces cultivation technologies and production methods developed at Aurora’s Canadian facilities, covering lighting, irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest processing.
The site has also added exclusive cannabis strains developed at Aurora Coast, the company's research and development center located in British Columbia.
According to Aurora, these improvements should make it possible to increase production volumes while ensuring greater consistency throughout the growing cycles. The investment is estimated to be several million euros, ranging from 5 to 9 million. Local employment is also expected to increase, with the workforce growing from approximately 45 to 55 employees.
The EU-GMP certification The site permit was extended to cover the expansion and was issued by the competent regulatory authority in Saxony-Anhalt.
«The completion of the transformation of our Leuna site marks an important milestone for Aurora and reinforces our commitment to meeting the needs of patients in our most dynamic markets, particularly in Germany, where we are proud to be a local manufacturer,» said Alex Miller, executive vice president of operations and supply chain at Aurora. «Now known as Aurora Horizon, this EU Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-certified facility strengthens our ability to meet the needs of patients in Germany, while advancing our Europe-wide growth strategy. By bringing Aurora’s proven expertise in cultivation and operations to Leuna, along with our cutting-edge genetic varieties, we have significantly advanced the site and our ability to drive growth in the region.»
Aurora a won for the first time in 2019 A national call for bids issued by the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) for the cultivation of medical cannabis within Germany. The Leuna facility, located in Saxony-Anhalt, was built specifically to fulfill this contract.
What kind of access do patients have?
While Aurora's investment represents a significant step forward for the German medical cannabis industry, its implications for patients remain difficult to assess.
Increased domestic production should eventually improve product availability and alleviate some of the pressure on the supply chain. However, patient access also depends on prescribing guidelines, pharmacy inventory levels, reimbursement policies, and retail prices, who have been thrown into turmoil by the latest decisions in this regard.
