Why is cannabis considered a depressant?

Cannabis is generally considered by the public to be a “soft” drug, due to its low potential for addiction and relatively minor health risks, but it is primarily a psychoactive substance. There are several classifications of psychoactive substances. The most common are hallucinogens and neuroleptics. Each of these categories has its own characteristics. So why is cannabis considered a depressant, alongside alcohol and tranquilizers?

Cannabis has effects similar to those of depressants

Cannabis has a significant effect on the human body through its action on the endocannabinoid system. When consumed, it has certain effects on the user: the red eyes and/or dilated pupils, a increased appetite and a slower response time for example.

Cannabis is considered a depressant because it slows down brain activity and acts as a sedative that calms the body. It reduces the sensation of pain and touch.

Cannabis is also a «disruptor»

But cannabis isn’t just a depressant; it can also improve mood and reduce stress. The two best-known cannabinoids are responsible for this:cannabidiol (CBD) has relaxing and euphoric properties, whereas the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible for the «high» due to its psychoactive properties.

Contrary to popular belief, cannabis does not cause depression. In a study published in the the journal JAMA Psychiatry, Scientists explain that cannabis use in adulthood is not associated with mood or anxiety disorders, including depression. If a person with depression uses cannabis, it may exacerbate their depression, but the substance does not cause depression. Each cannabis user must determine whether using it helps them feel better or makes the situation worse.

In short, cannabis can be considered a depressant, but it can also act as a stimulant or even like a (mild) hallucinogen. The effects vary from person to person, depending on the strain consumed as well as psychological and physiological factors.
