Why are pot smokers always hungry?
Many pot smokers have experienced a severe slump after using. But why?
The serious enigma has been traced back to scientists at Yale University, who studied the brains of mice exposed to cannabinoids. The results have been published in Nature magazine. To put it simply, POMC neurons (pro opiomelanocortin, nothing to do with POMC - POMV) are usually responsible for informing the body of the level of satiety.
Under the effect of cannabinoids, these neurons transmit the opposite information, secreting a beta-endorphin that makes you feel hungry, even though you're already full. The brain is thus fooled, and the consumer finds himself rummaging through his cupboards in search of chips and popcorn. The Anglo-Saxons have even coined a term for hunger after smoking: «munchies».
Although the subject may make you smile, this craving induced by the effect of cannabinoids such as THC or CBD (cannabidiol) can actually help some patients to counteract the reduced appetite caused by their illness or medications, such as chemotherapy.
Some cannabinoids, such as THCV on the other hand, seem to have the opposite effect, reducing the sensation of hunger.
