How to decide between all the weed varieties and distinguish the best cannabis varieties? Leafly lists almost 1,600 types of weed, making it mission impossible to test them all, even if you have to get up early. But that's without counting... the Cannabis Cup!

The Cannabis Cup was created in 1988 by Steven Hager, then editor of the American magazine High Times. Since then, it has been held every November in Amsterdam, and since 2010 in the United States (Seattle, Denver, Michigan, Northern California and Southern California). The Cannabis Cup allows judges from all over the world to test and vote for their favorite marijuana.

To become a judge, an entry fee of around €250 is required. Each judge must then pay for the samples tested, which must represent a small budget at the end of the weekend.

Various prizes are awarded, including the best weed, the best hash or the best new product. Concerning best weed, judges vote for the best indica, the best sativa, the best hybrid weed, The best concentrates, the best edibles and the highest levels of CBD. The Cannabis Cup also organizes concerts, conferences and forums on products from the cannabis industry.

All graded samples are previously tested by independent laboratories to determine levels of THC and CBD.

This means we have 27 years of awards to distinguish the world's best cannabis strains. Some species have won several prizes, sometimes from different seed banks or growers. The great Cannabis Cup winners are therefore :

  • 1st place for Haze (11 awards, including one hybrid with Skunk)
  • 2nd place for Kush (3 prizes)
  • 3rd place for Skunk (3 prizes including a hybrid with Haze)

    The best weed in the world is based on one or more Cannabis Cups‘ that are purely and simply commercial, where the winners are already known in advance thanks to shenanigans between producers who exchange or resell their elite clones? if you believe in this, you also believe in Santa Claus. The best weed in the world is to be found deep in India or South America, or anywhere else on the planet but here.

        Hi Juan. The controversy is not new. Our point was to «objectively» distinguish the best weed, and not necessarily the best coffee/grower/sponsor. One way is to use the CC rankings, but that's just a question of methodology 🙂

        But you're right about the winners. We hope that with the development of the various CCs around the world, things will change a little. And if not, the Emerald Cup will become the new benchmark.

    a bit of a limited article, it's just the winners of the cup a dam and only the coffeeshop part of the cup which was the only part open to the public and was sometimes (not always) suspected of being bought by the greenhouse or barneys. Besides, this cup has been dead for 3 years. You talk about American cups but you don't say anything about them, even though all the good strains, including dam strains like haze, skunk etc, originally came from there. In the States, og kush and its descendants have won more cups than any other variety. And then there are packs of weed that have won more than 3 cups, tangie (22 cup), strawberry banana (18 cup) kosher kush (17 cup) cookies & cream (10 cup) true og (9 cup) lemon og (8 cup) grand daddy purple (7 cup) sour diesel (6 cup) girl scout cookies, Gorilla glue #4, strawberry cough, pre98 bubba kush, headband, skywalker og (5 cup) etc etc etc.... amsterdam is dead for weed it's gone to shit
