Cannabidiol (CBD), an anti-inflammatory for animals
As medical cannabis gains more and more attention, pet owners are beginning to wonder whether their beloved pets might also benefit from the advantages of cannabis, particularly from the cannabidiol (or CBD). In fact, some American veterinarians are already prescribing CBD treatments for pets.
Our small animals could represent a significant market niche medical cannabis. In the United States, one-third of households reportedly have a dog or a cat. As a result, the pet industry now legally offers products containing CBD derived from hemp.
Symptoms identical to those in men
Veterinarians do not yet know The Long-Term Effects of THC on Dogs. However, the uses of CBD in dogs are thought to be relatively similar to those in humans. Following the success of treatments for epilepsy and joint pain in humans, new products are appearing online. It is estimated that between 1 and 5 % of dogs in the United States suffer from some form of epilepsy.
Canna-pet, an American company, has chosen this niche market to expand its business. Backed by a study from the Colorado Department of Health, Canna-pet offers CBD dietary supplements. Available in capsule or oil form, these supplements are suitable for both dogs and cats. If your horse is limping, the company offers a high-dose option to help your animal.
A French veterinarian is selling it
The Acti-sud veterinary clinic in La Roche-sur-Yon, in the Vendée department, offers this medication. Over the phone, the veterinarian explained to us that he prescribes these supplements for pets suffering from osteoarthritis or for end-of-life animals with cancer. Having distributed Canna-Pet only since March 2016, the veterinarian has prescribed it just 5 or 6 times and states that there have been no miracle cures or entirely positive feedback regarding this product.
Of course, these products must be dosed according to the recommendations of qualified professionals—just as is the case with humans, after all.
