Study: hens fed hemp produce healthier eggs
According to a 2013 study, hens fed with hemp produce healthier eggs. Although farmers often feed flax seed, which is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, hemp seed is rarely used.
Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute for Animal Health wanted to know whether cannabis seeds could be used as a dietary supplement. The study, published in the Journal of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, indicates that cannabis seeds can enrich egg yolk.
In the experiment, hemp residues from oil extraction were compared with those from rapeseed and linseed. The THC and CBD levels of these supplements were both less than 0.005%.
The inclusion of cannabis products in laying hen feed has no negative impact on the performance of laying hens and leads to enrichment in the omega-3 fatty acid content of eggs.
In the study, hemp-fed hens produced larger eggs. Egg yolks were also richer in omega-3 fatty acids compared to the yolks of hens in the rapeseed group, but not the yolks of flaxseed hens.
Cannabis seeds belong to the group of superfoods with a ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, and contain 10 amino acids, but are also rich in vitamins and minerals.
Other studies have shown that hemp-fed cows are more relaxed.
