Canadian hemp at the Beijing Winter Olympics
Made from industrial hemp, grown in southern Alberta and processed in Calgary, will be used to secure the bobsled and luge tracks during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
The company Canadian Greenfield Technologies, which specializes in processing industrial hemp, shipped 163 kilograms of its NForce Fiber to reinforce the construction of the Xiaohaituo runway near Beijing.
Its product has already been used in North America to reinforce swimming pools and skateparks, but the Chinese contract is a first for the company.
«This is international recognition.» acknowledges Stephen Christensen, the company's director.
«They tried to do it without our fiber and found some cracks, so they came back to us.»
Numerous tests were indeed conducted over the past year and confirmed the advantage of using hemp fiber over glass or plastic fibers. Unlike its counterparts, hemp fiber does not protrude from the concrete and can act as a bridge between two sections that are trying to pull apart.
Canadian Greenfield Technologies It currently employs 11 people and began its research on hemp six years ago to produce gardening supplies, beauty products, and cat litter.
