Curaleaf Is the First to Register Medical Cannabis Products in Spain
Curaleaf has become the first company to register standardized medical cannabis products in Spain.
These records, approved by the’Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), pave the way for the provision of standardized preparations based on THC and CBD to hospital pharmacies, in accordance with in accordance with the new national regulations.
First Cannabis-Based Medications in Spain
The two products, one of which THC-dominant and the other CBD-dominant, were registered under the following reference numbers, respectively CAN-1 and CAN-2. According to Curaleaf, the official registry number confirms that it is the first company to have successfully completed the registration process under the royal decree 903/2025, Spain's new regulatory framework governing standardized cannabis-based preparations for medical use.
Adopted by the Spanish Council of Ministers on October 7, 2025, the royal decree 903/2025 establishes the national regulatory framework governing the production, registration, and use of standardized cannabis-based preparations.
As part of of this system, registered preparations are not dispensed directly to patients. Instead, they will be provided to hospital pharmacies, where they can be used to produce master formulas prescribed by healthcare professionals.
However, patients will have to wait until the new Spanish framework is fully operational before these medications become available.
Spain: A Strategic Market for Curaleaf
These records are based on the Curaleaf's current operations in Spain, where the company operates a facility EU-GMP certified and a research laboratory in Alicante.
Its Spanish subsidiary, Medalchemy SL, has already obtained what Curaleaf describes as the first license issued by the’AEMPS authorizing the processing of medical cannabis derivatives for commercial distribution.
For Boris Jordan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Curaleaf, these recordings reinforce the the company's long-term ambitions in Europe.
«Spain, a country with a population of nearly 50 million, has always played a central role in Curaleaf’s vision for Europe, and this registration marks a decisive turning point for us.»
Mr. Jordan also discussed the company's history in the country.
«We were the first company to obtain a license here in 2020, and we believe we are now the first to register under these new regulations. This achievement reflects the strength of our team, our ongoing investment in science, and our belief that patients deserve access to standardized, high-quality cannabis-based medicines.»
