Florida: the fear of cannabis candy for Halloween
Florida authorities concerned about potential distribution of candies infused with cannabis for Halloween. With two weeks to go before a vote on the legalization of medical cannabis in the state, the sheriffs' association lists a number of products that are dangerous for children.
At a press conference, the Orange County Sheriff urges parents to check and warn children of this potential danger. «As sheriff, I believe this amendment will have a negative impact on the public health of our community.»
The police take a stand
The small conflict of interest that arises from this conference arises when we learn that it was held in the premises of anti-legalization activists.
At «Dont let Florida go to pot» , Florida's anti-cannabis organization doesn't skimp on terrifying slogans like: «A medical cannabis dispensary is another word for drug dealer». «Your children will have easier access to cannabis» «Do we want to replace pharmacies with pot stores». «More drug-induced accidents».»
At the same time, the pro-legalization crowd is up in arms, accusing the sheriffs of heightening fear of the product.
»What the sheriff is saying is totally unrealistic,» says Ben Pollara, director of the Group. United For Care. «In fact, none of this has happened in the other 25 states where medical cannabis is legal». The sheriff was unable to cite any examples of such incidents.
In Colorado, the number of’children hospitalized for THC intoxication. According to Associated Press, 45 children were hospitalized for consuming cannabis-infused candy in 2014. However, Halloween is not a peak season for intoxication. A peak that is unlikely to occur in Colorado, given that THC-infused candies have been banned.
For medical cannabis to be legalized on November 8 in Florida, the «yes» side will need to win at least 60 % of the vote.
