The first International Cannabis Church opens in Colorado for 4/20

This Thursday, April 20, 2017, the First International Church of Cannabis opens in Denver. In this sacred place, members—known as «Elevationists»—will devote themselves solely to the spiritual power of cannabis.

Higher power

The 113-year-old building was renovated and redecorated by Lee Molloy and Steve Berke. These two Colorado residents took advantage of current state laws to establish a nonprofit religious organization.  »This new chapter will help foster an international community.».

The founders of the International Church of Cannabis «claim no authority or divine truth; all faiths are welcome within the building.» In addition to traditional beliefs, church members will devote themselves to «spiritual journeys and self-discovery.» A process that, according to the founders, is accelerated by cannabis use. Berke and Lee Molloy hope to help adults «seeking to create a better vision of themselves.» This message is shared by Bill Levin, who had opened a Another "Church of Cannabis" in 2015 in Indiana.

Residents' Concerns

Neighbors and local authorities fear that this church is merely a loophole to create a Cannabis Social Club. Consumption in a public place is still illegal in Colorado. For now, the two pioneers of this new church are navigating uncharted waters but deny that they are setting up a cannabis lounge or nightclub. The church will be monitored by law enforcement to ensure that it does not become a haven for distressed smokers.

Open House

To mark the opening of this sacred site for cannabis enthusiasts, the «Elevationists» are hosting an open house. Okuda San Miguel and Kenny Scharf will present an exhibition on the history of the church and their contribution to its renovation. Several artists, comedians, and musicians will also be on hand for the occasion. The event will be streamed on the The «Elevationists»" Facebook page».
