Colorado offers $420,000 cannabis-funded scholarships to high school graduates
Colorado has decided to award scholarships totaling 420,000 $ to 210 high school graduates in Pueblo County. On June 20, 2017, the high school graduates each received 2,000 $, a sum directly funded by cannabis revenue, from the Pueblo County Scholarship Fund and through the scholarship program of the Colorado. This program is the world's first scholarship funded by cannabis taxes.
The Pueblo County police chief explains that the amount allocated for academic scholarships is not a reference to the 420, the day that celebrates cannabis use, is just a simple coincidence.
County officials organized an event near the Pueblo County Courthouse to present scholarships to graduating students. Of the 210 recipients, 143 were presented with certificates in front of a crowd of 300 people.
Jeanette Garcia, a member of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, spoke to the local newspaper The Pueblo Chieftain. In it, she says she is extremely proud of her students: «Congratulations to all the graduates and scholarship recipients, especially those from the county, for demonstrating this vision of investment on the part of our citizens.».
The scholarship program funded by cannabis taxes was launched last year. Twenty-three students had already received scholarships. Today, all high school graduates in Pueblo County are eligible for this scholarship. They will receive it provided they enroll at one of the two local universities: Pueblo Community College or Colorado State University-Pueblo.
In addition, Colorado State University-Pueblo recently established a Cannabis Research Institute on its campus. Beverly Duran, director of the city’s Hispanic Education Foundation, emphasizes her hope that every student who has applied for a scholarship will receive one upon graduation.
