Dabber: the indispensable dabbing tool

A dabber, also known as a dabbing tool, is an essential accessory for any dabbing session. dabbing. It allows you to take a dose of cannabis concentrate (wax, shatter, BHO, rosin, Piattella...) and apply it precisely to the heated surface of a nail or banger, without direct finger contact.

What is a dabber?

A dabber is an elongated tool, generally 10 to 15 cm long, with a pointed or shaped end, depending on its use. Its function is simple: to act as an intermediary between the concentrate and the heated surface of the dab rig, like the tongs a cook uses to handle hot food.

In addition to safety (avoiding burns on contact with the banger heated to 300-500°C) the dabber also makes it possible to accurately measure the amount of concentrate taken, which is particularly important with extractions whose THC concentration can exceed 70 to 80%.

The different types of dabbers

The shape of the dabber tip is not insignificant: it determines which types of concentrate the tool works best with.

Tapered tip / lancet The most common and versatile form. Ideal for firm concentrates, such as shatter, the Piattella or solid hash. It allows you to pierce and remove clean pieces without crushing the concentrate.

Ballpoint tip A small sphere at the end, perfect for soft, sticky concentrates such as budder, sauce or live resin. It picks up the concentrate by rolling rather than pricking.

Scoop tip A small concavity for collecting very liquid or granular concentrates such as kief or certain types of rosin. Also useful for collecting leftovers in a container.

Spatula tip / pallet A wide, flat tip, suitable for concentrates with a buttery or creamy consistency. Allows concentrate to be spread evenly in the banger for homogeneous heating.

Integrated carb cap tip some dabbers combine the sampling tip with a carb cap at the other end, reducing the number of accessories to be handled during the session.

Materials: what are the differences?

The dabber material has a direct impact on flavor purity and tool durability.

Stainless steel The most widely used material. Robust, easy to clean, chemically inert at high temperatures. No off-flavors. Suitable for all types of concentrate. Only drawback: it heats up quickly if brought too close to the banger, which can prematurely melt the concentrate before application.

Quartz The most appreciated by connoisseurs for its total neutrality of taste and aesthetic appeal. More fragile than steel, it can break if dropped. Ideal for top-of-the-range extractions where flavour preservation is a priority (Piattella, live hash rosin).

Borosilicate glass Similar in taste to quartz, generally less expensive. Fragile and not recommended for intensive use.

Titanium Highly resistant and heat conductive. May slightly alter the taste of the most aromatic concentrates if the tool is not food-grade (grade 2). Preferable for less noble concentrates rather than premium extractions.

Ceramics Good taste neutrality, less common. Fragile and difficult to clean thoroughly.

How do I use a dabber?

  1. Heat the banger to the desired temperature using a torch (usually 30 to 60 seconds for a standard quartz banger).
  2. Leave to cool banger to the desired dab temperature - between 300°C and 450°C depending on the type of concentrate and the desired effect. For a low temp dab that preserves terpenes, aim for 300-380°C and wait 30-45 seconds after the torch has stopped.
  3. Take the concentrate with the tip of the dabber, adjusting the quantity to your experience and extraction power.
  4. Apply concentrate by gently turning the dabber against the banger wall, to avoid the concentrate burning immediately on contact.
  5. Cover with a carb cap to maintain heat and promote complete vaporization of the concentrate at low temperature.
  6. Clean the dabber immediately after use with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol, while residues are still warm and malleable.

How to maintain and clean a dabber?

A dabber that accumulates carbonized residues alters the taste of subsequent sessions and can contaminate your concentrates. Regular maintenance is therefore essential.

Hot cleaning (recommended method): immediately after each session, wipe the tip of the dabber with a dry cotton swab or one soaked in 90°+ isopropyl alcohol while residues are still melting. This is by far the most effective and least time-consuming method.

Cold cleaning For dried and hardened residues, soak the tip of the dabber in isopropyl alcohol for 15 to 30 minutes, then rub with a cotton swab. For steel or titanium dabbers, a light flame will also burn off residues.

Avoid Cleaning products: household cleaners, washing-up liquid and any non-food solvent, which can leave chemical residues on the tool.

Which dabber to choose?

To begin, a dabber in stainless steel lancet tip is the best compromise: versatile, robust, easy to clean and inexpensive (€5 to €15). For high-end concentrates and aroma-oriented sessions, a dabber in quartz offers maximum taste neutrality. If you regularly consume concentrates of varying consistencies, a kit including several shapes of tip (lancet + spoon + spatula) will be a useful investment.
