Cannabis sales at Outside Land Festival top 1 million $
At the beginning of August, near San Francisco, the Outside Land, The music festival was granted a temporary permit to sell and consume cannabis. Some 200,000 visitors were able to purchase a wide range of products, for a total estimated value of over $1 million.
Highland Events, The organizers of the festival have not yet released precise figures for cannabis sales, but have stated that revenues reached seven figures at the event. Over the course of the weekend, spectators were allowed to purchase up to 7 grams of flowers and up to 2 grams of concentrates, including edibles, from all vendors. Products available included infused chocolates, jelly beans, joints, weed and THC-infused alcohol-free beer. L’Outside Lands is the largest public cannabis sales event to date, with 24 major brands taking part, including Cresco, Cookies, Flow Kana and DomPen.
The sales might not have happened, however. According to vendors, festival organizers didn't receive permits to sell and consume cannabis until around five hours before the doors opened, despite an announcement from the city's cannabis control authorities two days before the event that the permits had been approved.
The fear for the organizers was that the large park would be completely devastated. However, according to a report by SFIST, The GrassLands area of the festival, where the sales took place, was cleaner than the areas where alcohol was allowed, and there were no medical emergencies or incidents requiring police intervention. «The atmosphere was really cool and very respectful. It's not only respectful of the people, but also respectful of the park,» said Marisa Rodriguez, director of the San Francisco Office of Cannabis.
The Northern Night Music Festival, another musical event was also granted an exceptional permit in July.
