Amsterdam's 15 best coffeeshops in 2020
Even if their numbers are falling, Amsterdam will always be the capital of coffeeshops. If the choice proves too hard, Zamnesia awarded its Amsterdam Coffeeshop Awards 2020, a list of the 15 best coffeeshops in Amsterdam.
1. Boerejongens
Boerejongens is known for its drugstore look and its menu of Amsterdam Genetics strains, either straight weed or the refined «hash block». The edibles are also very good. Prices are relatively reasonable. Boerejongens has 4 stores in Amsterdam.
2. Stud
Stud is a small coffeeshop in East Amsterdam. On the menu are American strains such as Zkittlez and Gelato, as well as Amsterdam varieties such as Amnesia Haze, hash from Kush or Cookie, and moonrocks. The atmosphere is warm and native.
3. Tweede Kamer
Opened in 1985, Tweede Kamer has stood the test of time. With room for just 20 people, the intimate atmosphere invites you to relax. You'll find hashes from Amnesia and Nepal. Vintage at its best.
4. Coffeeshop Amsterdam
Located on Haarlemmerstraat, not far from Barney's and the Greenhouse, Coffeeshop Amsterdam is a hipster's den. The weed is good, though, and the Brooklyn-style industrial ambience combines perfectly with the comfort of the sofas.
5. Happy Feelings
Happy Feelings sells nothing more than its name. The menu is quite extensive, with US strains and Strawberry Banana hash. However, you'll have to tolerate the purple neon lights.
6. Coffeeshop DNA
Located in the south of Amsterdam, Coffeeshop DNA offers different varieties of Amsterdam Genetics. The bar is really pretty, and the presentation neat.
7. The Bulldog
One of Amsterdam's oldest coffeeshops, with several locations around the city, Le Bulldog is also very (too?) popular. Le Bulldog of the Leidseplein is now a great way to visit a former prison and be sure of getting out, while its canal-side versions are quieter.
8. Coffeeshop Johnny
Also affiliated with Amsterdam Genetics, Coffeeshop Johnny is close to the Negen Straatjes, a small district full of thrift shops and trendy boutiques. Ideal for getting motivated before window-shopping.
9. Barney's Coffeeshop
Mythical Barney's has won numerous awards at Cannabis Cups. Providing Volcano vaporizers for its customers, it offers a serious menu, just a 5-minute walk from Central Station. Ideal for a last smoke before heading out.
10. The 1st Hulp
Known for its moonrocks, the 1st Hulp is also a convivial coffee shop where you can linger in the company of the host of the place, a cat. The tea is also very good, and the staff pleasant, which is rare enough to be noticed.
11. De Kade
A small coffeeshop in Dam, with pinball and table soccer. The prices are light and the food delicious. De Kade also offers vegan options, for example with space cake with oats. Inclusion is important, even when you're high.
12. Het Ballonnetje
Better known for its weed, Het Ballonetje also boasts an attractive hash and edible menu. One of the oldest coffeeshops, just across from the University of Amsterdam.
13. Amnesia
Coffee popular with night owls, the’Amnesia works with Barney's Farm for its varieties. It's ideally situated beside the canal, an advantage not to be overlooked in summer.
14. Green House
Coffeeshop of the seed company of the same name, Green House offers in-house varieties. If you're lucky, you might even bump into Arjan Roskam and his team of Strain Hunters!
15. Abraxas
Once past the dark alleyway it opens onto, the’Abraxas offers an attractive wooded interior on two levels. It features traditional varieties such as Cheese and White Widow, as well as Nepalese and Moroccan hashes.
