Abraxas
The Abraxas Coffee Shop is located right in the heart of Amsterdam, near the main tram lines and Dam Square. However, its tourist-friendly location doesn't mean it's a tourist trap.
The name Abraxas is taken from a children’s story, *The Little Witch*, by Otfried Preußler, in which a little witch goes on adventures with a cheerful and lively raven. Abraxas’s mission is to accompany its visitors just as the raven did with the little witch.
Originally a nightclub, the Abraxas is now open all day and has become one of Amsterdam’s best-known coffeeshops. The interior of the coffeeshop, which is mostly made of wood, is decorated in a very colorful style and is quite bright—provided the weather is nice. Otherwise, the Abraxas quickly becomes dark.
The upper level features small tables that are set back a bit more than those on the ground floor and can accommodate groups of 4 to 8 people. The music is relatively low-key. If you plan to stay a while at the café, Abraxas offers Wi-Fi and board games. You can also purchase a deck of cards featuring the café’s logo, with the famous raven. A few outdoor tables are available for smoking al fresco.
Abraxas Coffeeshop Menu
As for the menu, Abraxas offers just as much weed as hash. Among the weed options are Amsterdam classics like White Widow, Amnesia Haze, Cheese, and Casey Jones, with prices ranging from 11 to 16€ per gram. The hash selection is mostly Moroccan (ketama, pollen, or Crème du Maroc), with some Lebanese hash, Indian charas, and Crème du Népal.
For those who want to take a little piece of Amsterdam home with them, Abraxas has opened a shop four doors down from the coffee shop and offers hemp clothing, T-shirts, and accessories such as grinders, pipes, vaporizers, bongs, and seeds.
Abraxas, located not far from the Amsterdam train station, is often the last coffee shop tourists visit. So it’s not uncommon for it to be very crowded inside.
