THC-O-acetate: a cannabinoid three times more potent than THC

The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, and therefore the one responsible for its effects. Some cannabis concentrates now reach THC concentrations of nearly 99%, such as the THC-A Crystalline. We didn't necessarily imagine a more potent cannabinoid, but that was without taking into account the THC-O-acetate.

THC-O-acetate is a relatively little-known cannabinoid, but it is more potent than THC in its natural form. It was first discovered by the DEA in 1978 during a raid. It is believed to have been created using a method similar to that used to produce heroin from morphine, involving a Soxhlet extractor.

«The extract was acetylated with acetic anhydride, and in the final step, the excess acetic anhydride was removed by distillation. The product contained no underedivated cannabinoids or any identifiable plant fragments.» according to Donald A. Cooper from the DEA.

Cooper also explains that «the effect of acetate is more spiritual and psychedelic than that of the ordinary product. The most unique property of this substance is that there is a 30-minute delay before its effects are felt. » American researchers sought to determine the incapacitating effects of THC-O-acetate on dogs. After conducting experiments, they found that it was twice as effective as THC at impairing muscle coordination.

As for its potency, estimates range from 2 to 3 times that of THC. That said, even Americans will have a hard time finding it at a dispensary—or even on the black market. Seizures of THC-O-acetate are very rare, which also reflects its limited availability, due in part to the complexity of its production.
