Pokemon Go, even more socializing than cannabis
Nintendo's new hit game, Pokémon Go, is reigniting the passion of Pokémon trainers around the world. The game's interactive nature, highlighted by its creators, allows players to make new encounters at PokéStops or in Gyms..
The game—whose French release has been postponed—is attracting more and more fans every day. The need to go out and about to fill out your Pokédex encourages encounters with other enthusiastic trainers. The community created by this game transcends differences in age, gender, and social background. A a community reminiscent of the cannabis community but one that offers even more possibilities.
The Pokémon Arena system, located in key spots throughout each city, serves as a gathering place for the community. French stoners, except during events like the World Cannabis March or the call on the 18thThey don't have a designated gathering place. Unless they organize an event that brings together as many people as possible, outdoor smokers are scattered across the benches and lawns in the parks. On the one hand, the fewer people there are, the lower the risk of getting caught.
Pokémon Go, in addition to being legal, also lets you pass your Pokémon around to your neighbors. It’s a concept of sharing that’s usually associated with cannabis smokers. Beyond sharing, the system—which encourages you to get off the couch—doesn’t lose sight of the message from the iconic opening credits: »One day I’ll be the best Trainer.» What could be more exhilarating than battling Pokémon on the street against a real opponent standing right in front of you? All in a friendly, pressure-free atmosphere.
With its focus on gathering supplies, trading, meeting others, and testing your strength against your neighbors, Pokémon Go has many resemblance to cannabis. We can also mention the slight addiction these two phenomena can cause. The French version of the game should be available within the week—unless you've already found a way to get your hands on it through unofficial channels 😉
