Défoncé Chocolatier: combining pleasure and design
The market for edibles is great. People who prefer to ingest marijuana rather than smoke it now have plenty of options pasta sauce, chewing gum, candy...
The problem with space food is its uncertain, random and unpredictable outcome: it can be loaded, take a long time to take effect and the body may not necessarily metabolize it.
One of the first companies to tackle this issue in a comprehensive way was Défoncé Chocolatier. This Oakland-based company specializes in high-end cannabis-infused chocolate, with one of the most user-friendly products created to date.
«Our main concern is consistency,» says Défoncé CEO Eric Eslao. He talks about every aspect of its design: from the materials used to the quality of the ingredients (sustainable cacao crops), to the shape of the chocolate bar itself. It's made up of 18 pryamide-shaped squares, identical in volume, and each containing 10mg of THC. «I spent 6 years at Apple, where we paid very close attention to detail, down to the pixel. When we created this product, we devoted the same attention to detail.».
Défoncé uses concentrated cannabis oil instead of the traditional Marrakech butter, According to Eslao, this allows the THC to be distributed more efficiently throughout the bar. Chocolate lovers won't be left out: the chocolate comes in coffee, vanilla, mint and hazelnut flavours.
The result is a chic and elaborate tablet, whose design has left behind the traditional cannabis leaf for clear instructions and dosage recommendations. The product is currently only available in American dispensaries (20$ per tablet), but it's easy to imagine it soon being sold in restaurants if the California legalizes cannabis in November.
That's what Défoncé's approach is all about: a quality product, thoughtful packaging, stable dosage and taste, to create an experience that will attract more and more consumers. «If you pay attention to detail, the experience will be that much better.
