Peru legalizes medical cannabis
The Peruvian Congress overwhelmingly voted in favor of Medical cannabis legalization bill, which will initially allow for the production, import, and sale of cannabis oil.
Last Friday's vote had 67 votes in favor, 5 against, and 3 abstentions.
The initial laws should be written in 60 days., according to the deputy Alberto de Belaunde, one of the authors of the bill. He adds that «thousands of patients and their families will have hope and a better quality of life.».
On October 11, the Health Committee of Peru had approved the legislation and forwarded the proposal to Congress. The text must now be approved by Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who had himself proposed the measure earlier this year.
The trigger for this decision had occurred last February after law enforcement raided a factory where a group of mothers produced cannabis oil to treat their children with epilepsy or cancer. The public outrage that followed led to the introduction of this medical cannabis legalization proposal.
Peru joins its neighbors Chileans, Colombians, Argentinians and Uruguayan which already authorize medical cannabis use.
Cannabis oil will only be available in pharmacies with a prescription.
