French study shows cannabis effective against restless legs syndrome (RLS)

The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of the nervous system. It is characterized by a continual need to move the legs. Also known as «Willis and Ekbom disease» or «muscular impatience syndrome of wakefulness», this condition is accompanied by annoying itching such as tingling or the sensation of having received an electric shock.

This condition generally occurs in the evening, at bedtime. Indeed, RLS sufferers feel an insatiable urge to move their legs or walk once they've gone to bed. In France, 8.5 % of the population suffers from RLS, with around 2 % experiencing symptoms several times a week, according to health insurance data.

French study proves effectiveness of cannabis on RLS

Two French experts from the University of Bordeaux Hospital, Imad Ghorayeb and Thomas Megelin, have observed the effects of cannabis on RLS symptoms. They conducted a study based on six symptomatic patients. Two of them were given painkillers containing high doses of opiates that regulate dopamine.

These two patients experienced side-effects such as a constant desire to eat. They even used clonazepam and gabapentin, powerful antiepileptic drugs that do not have the desired effect on RLS symptoms.

On the other hand, the other patients consumed recreational cannabis as well as cannabis oil. cannabidiol (CBD) administered under the tongue. The results were convincing: Symptoms disappeared following cannabis consumption.

The doctor explains that cannabis is the most tolerated substance and the most effective against the treatment compared with the other drugs tested.

However, the Bordeaux researchers explain that the effect is made possible by the action of cannabis on the receptors of endocannabinoid system. They are responsible for the sensation of pain due to the symptoms of the disease. Cannabis is also effective against anxiety and promotes sleep, which explains the disappearance of symptoms.

Limited factors

The report does, however, present some limited factors. They explain that the psychoactive side of cannabis due to the THC may influence their conclusions. «Clinical trials need to be carried out to determine whether the cannabinoids from the plant are really safe and effective for the treatment of RLS,» explain the researchers from the Bordeaux hospital.

The conclusion of this research suggests that further experiments are required to demonstrate further satisfactory results in the treatment of restless legs syndrome..
