Study: cannabis does not increase suicide rates among psychiatric patients
According to the results a study conducted by researchers at MacMaster University in Ontario (Canada), cannabis use is not linked to suicidal behaviour in psychiatric patients.
The scientists analyzed several previous studies and compiled the data from a sample of 985 adults. The aim was to determine whether there was a link between cannabis use and suicidal behaviour in men and women with psychiatric disorders.
Their results show that no link can be established between cannabis use and suicide attempts in patients. According to the author, «our results indicate that there is no association between cannabis use and suicidal behavior in men and women with psychiatric disorders, contrary to what has been reported for the general population, although intensity of use may have an effect in men».
He also believes that «research should continue to investigate the various risk factors for suicidal behavior in this population, among which cannabis is not one according to our results».
