Mellow Yellow
The coffeeshop Mellow Yellow is, according to legend, Amsterdam's oldest coffeeshop, and opened in 1967. It was named after the song Mellow Yellow which describes the singer's attempt to intoxicate himself by smoking banana peel.
At its inception, the sale of cannabis was still prohibited in Amsterdam. So sales were made in front of the counter, by dealers posing as customers, and the cannabis was stored behind secret doors.
Today, the Mellow Yellow embodies the bad tendencies of what has become of Amsterdam's cannabis business. A not always warm welcome, a lack of decoration, old tables...
Mellow Yellow coffeeshop menu
The Mellow Yellow menu is quite appetizing. Blueberry, Diesel and Enemy of the State for indica, SSH, Tangilope, Dr. Greenspoon or 24K for sativa, with prices ranging from €8.5 to €17 for the most expensive.
When it comes to hash, you'll find Paki or King Hassan, at around €10 - €12 a gram, which is fair compared with other coffeeshops in central Amsterdam.
Unfortunately, comments often mention drying problems, or weed that isn't very potent but tasty, with qualities ranging from smokable to passable.
Unless you have to, you'll find nicer coffeeshops just about everywhere else.
