Canopy Growth Enters the U.K. Market with Four Canadian Strains

Canopy Growth is now selling its medical-grade cannabis flowers in the United Kingdom. The Canadian producer announced on September 22, 2026, that it would supply four strains to GROW Group U.K., which will distribute them under Canopy’s Spectrum Therapeutics brand.

This agreement allows Canopy to enter the British market, which is primarily served by private clinics. It also expands the company’s European operations at a time when Canadian exporters are under increased scrutiny regarding the methods used to grow and process their products.

A launch in the United Kingdom supported by Canadian supply

The four strains will come from Canopy’s cultivation site in Kincardine, Ontario. GROW Group, a British manufacturer and distributor of prescription cannabis-based medications, will handle their marketing in the United Kingdom. Neither company has disclosed launch volumes, prices, or the date on which the products will become available to patients.

Canopy states that the renewal of the European Union «Good Manufacturing Practices» (GMP) certification for the Kincardine site, announced in August, supports its supply to European medical markets. The United Kingdom, which has not been part of the European Union since Brexit, sets its own import requirements, but pharmaceutical manufacturing standards remain an important factor for companies seeking access to this market.

For Canopy, this agreement provides a foothold through a well-established local distributor in a market that relies heavily on imports. The company had already obtained a wholesale import license in 2019.

Why is the British market attractive to Canadian producers?

Medical cannabis is available by prescription in the United Kingdom, although access to it through the National Health Service (NHS) remains limited. According to figures cited by MJBizDaily and originating from Cannabis Europa, fewer than 20,000 NHS patients have a prescription, while approximately 100,000 patients obtain cannabis through private clinics. These estimates point to a market in which patients often pay for consultations and treatments out of pocket.

This structure creates opportunities for foreign suppliers. Other Canadian companies have taken different approaches to establishing a presence in the United Kingdom. Aurora Cannabis acquired Internode Pharma and HAP Pharma in August, thereby gaining an import facility and a licensed pharmacy. Tilray Brands, for its part, has begun marketing its own branded flower through the clinic and the the Lyphe clinic, which she acquired in April. Canopy's agreement with GROW Group adds another Canadian name to this increasingly crowded sector.

This launch in the United Kingdom is part of the continued growth of Canopy’s international operations. Its international cannabis revenue reached 9.6 million Canadian dollars during the quarter ended June 30, 2026, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year. European sales, particularly in Poland, contributed to this growth.

Throughout Europe, however, the standards governing imported flowers remain a major challenge for exporters. The German regulatory authorities have raised questions on the compliance of flowers grown according to agricultural standards and then processed in Europe with pharmaceutical requirements. German guidelines published in June identified drying as a critical step in the manufacturing process that should take place at the harvest site itself.
