The CannaSwissCup 2020/21: the 35 Swiss CBD varieties are selected
The CannaSwissCup is off to a flying start this year, as is the CannaSwiss market. CBD. The 35 varieties presented this year were selected by an expert jury. The Jury Boxes will soon be available for everyone to vote for this year's best CBD herb!
History of the CannaSwissCup
The idea of organizing a cup to elect the best Swiss herb was born at a meeting of the Swiss Hemp Coordination in 1998. Subsequently, the CannaSwissCup association was founded and the first cup organized. Six hemp growers took part with outside varieties. The award ceremony took place during the first Swiss Hemp Days (Schweizer Hanftage) in spring 1999 at the Stufenbau in Ittigen.
It was a lively affair, with music, sales stalls, food and, of course, lots of smoke... Jury members judged the varieties on appearance and taste. The event was such a success that it was repeated in 2000, this time with 8 varieties in the competition. The awards ceremony again took place during the Schweizer Hanftage, this time as part of a small hemp fair with exhibitors from Switzerland and abroad.
In 2001, the Schweizer Hanftage became the first hemp fair under the CannaTrade label and was held at the BEA exhibition site in Berne. The oldest hemp fair in the world still in operation, the CannaSwissCup has grown to include 12 varieties. As a result of increased repression in the 2010s, the CannaSwissCup association had to cease its activities and the Cup, and fell asleep like Sleeping Beauty...
...a slumber that lasted until 2016, when innovative growers marketed the first legal hemp flowers as a tobacco substitute and Switzerland resumed hemp cultivation.
It was clear that such an upsurge also called for the revival of the CannaSwissCup. Producers' interest in the Cup finally brought it back from the ashes.
The next cup: CannaSwissCup 2020/21!
The next CannaSwissCup looks very promising! Compared to last year, several new varieties have appeared on the CBD market. As in the glory years of the 1990s, Switzerland is once again growing hemp in hundreds of grow rooms, greenhouses and fields.
44 producers have registered 78 varieties for the CannaSwissCup 2020/21. The pre-selection of the best Swiss CBD cannabis strains by a VIP jury took place on Sunday January 24. The 78 strains submitted to the competition had been previously tested for the presence of nicotine, pesticides, mycotoxins and synthetic cannabinoids. 14 varieties were excluded from the
CannaSwissCup 2021 due to the detection of pesticide residues not authorized by the CannaSwissCup association regulations. None of the herbs contained synthetic cannabinoids.
The jury of professionals selected the 15 best indoor varieties, the 10 best outdoor varieties and the 10 best greenhouse varieties.
How is the final selection of the best herb made? They are consumers who select it on the basis of appearance and aroma, in a blind test, with no indication of the variety or producer.
