Canada chooses Denmark to grow medical cannabis in Europe
One of Canada's largest medical cannabis producers, Aurora Cannabis has announced last Thursday have entered into a partnership with Alfred Pedersen & Søn (APS), Denmark's largest tomato grower, to create Europe's largest medical cannabis cultivation operation.
The joint venture, under the gentle name of Aurora Nordic Cannabis, focused on the production and sale of cannabis in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland via its German subsidiary Pedanios GmbH.
The cultivation operation should be able to produce up to 120 tonnes of cannabis a year in a controlled 10-hectare environment.
The APS company received a cannabis production license on January 1, 2018. Denmark wishes to test medical cannabis for 4 years from the same date. Danish patients will be able to be prescribed cannabis to treat serious conditions such as cancer or multiple sclerosis, in the form of dried flowers, cannabis oil or capsules.
However, recreational use of cannabis remains illegal.
In December, Canopy Growth, Canada's largest medical cannabis producer, announced its intention to set up a 4-hectare medical cannabis plant in Odense, Denmark, 2 months after entering into partnership with Danish Cannabis ApS. The aim was to be able to meet the needs of 60,000 patients.
The end of last year saw a frenzy of announcements from Canadian cannabis producers. We learned, one after the other, that they were moving into Spain or to Portugal, This is despite the fact that the country already supplies a large proportion of the medical cannabis distributed in Europe. the world's largest exporter of medical cannabis.
