Denmark: government speeds up reimbursement of medical cannabis
Terminally ill patients who use medical cannabis to reduce their pain will have their treatment reimbursed from this month at 100%.
The law was passed last March and was due to come into force on January 1, 2019, but the Danish government has decided to accelerate its implementation. according to a press release from the Danish Ministry of Health.
«For patients who are dying and who will benefit from medical cannabis for the rest of their lives, we are ensuring right now that they will be reimbursed for their treatment for the whole of 2018, with retroactive application,» said Health Minister Ellen Trane.
Since the beginning of the year, Denmark has introduced a 4-year pilot trial for the legalization of medical cannabis for the most serious pathologies.
Liselott Blixt, health spokeswoman for the Danish People's Party, welcomed the government's decision.
«I'm delighted to see that we're making sure that people with terminal illnesses who benefit from medical cannabis don't have to think about cost or reimbursement.»
The Danish Medicines Agency will handle patient reimbursement directly.
