Weeds (2016)
Weeds is a Quebec 100% film, French subtitles included, released in 2016 in Quebec and directed by Louis Bélanger. It hits theaters tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5.
Synopsis
Jacques Sauvageau is an actor who flees to the Quebec countryside in the middle of winter, driven to the wall by his gambling debts. He meets wild farmer Simon Boulerice, who manipulates Jacques into working with him. Only, Simon has an unambiguous way of making money: he grows cannabis in his barn. Simon practically forces Jacques to work for him, with the compromise of paying off his gambling debts.
They meet Francesca, a pretty young woman and local EDF inspector, who comes to check on their high electricity consumption. She finds herself forcibly involved in their adventure. By harvest time, the three characters have learned to live together. But external events threaten the fragile balance of their business.

Review
A simple, tasty story, and an opportunity to discover the Quebec countryside in the middle of winter (filming took place in real-life conditions). The storyline is similar to Breaking Bad, but with less meth and more weed. The three characters, who should never have met, are touching, all a little broken by life, but with a fierce determination to pull through.
The strong sense of humor enhances the actors' performances, which, although very successful, are sometimes a little too easy. Special mention must go to Emmanuelle Lussier-Martinez as the Hydroquébec inspector, whose first film role makes a strong impression.
And something tells me we could be giving away tickets to the film tomorrow on Facebook and Twitter 😉
