Weedmaps partners with NuggMD to launch medical cannabis pilot program
Weedmaps and NuggMD have announced a partnership aimed at simplifying and improving the process of obtaining medical cannabis. The collaboration introduces a pilot program designed to provide a seamless experience for patients seeking medical cannabis via NuggMD's telehealth service.
Easier access to medical cannabis
The new pilot program, launched in five states - Florida, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Louisiana - is designed to bridge the gap between theory and actual access to medical cannabis. By integrating NuggMD's telemedicine platform into its site, Weedmaps aims to offer patients a complete solution, from learning about medical cannabis to purchasing products.
Jackie Gonzalez-Becerra, Vice President of Revenue at Weedmaps, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: «We're seeing more and more potential patients shopping on Weedmaps and specifically looking for cannabis as an alternative treatment option. We want to help these consumers learn about, access and purchase medical products in the safest and most convenient way possible. This sentiment underscores the commitment to providing a user-friendly experience for people exploring medical cannabis options.»
The integration of NuggMD's telehealth services with Weedmaps promises to improve the patient experience by offering a streamlined process. Patients will have access to educational resources on cannabis and a wide range of medical cannabis products on a single platform. This holistic approach not only simplifies the process, but also ensures that patients are well informed about their options.
Dr. Bonni Goldstein, medical director of Canna-Centers and medical advisor to Weedmaps, stressed the importance of this partnership in making medical cannabis more accessible.
«There are thousands of cannabis products on the market, and that can be overwhelming for new patients,» she noted. «This partnership connects two trusted leaders in the cannabis field who are focused on helping patients understand the importance of medical cannabis and how to achieve the desired effects.»
Meeting patients' needs
According to a survey conducted by Weedmaps in August 2023, around 33 % of those surveyed expressed a preference for using cannabis to treat symptoms of diagnosed medical conditions, the anxiety reduction and relaxation being the most common reasons. The NuggMD survey revealed that one in four participants used the cannabis for pain management. These statistics highlight the growing acceptance and use of cannabis for various therapeutic purposes in the United States.
Charlie Russell, Chief Revenue Officer of NuggMD, emphasized the broader mission of this partnership: «Millions of Americans use cannabis to improve their lives. Our mission is to help patients overcome barriers to access, and our partnership with Weedmaps serves that mission.».
Historical background and development
Weedmaps, founded in 2008 by two Californian patients who had benefited from the Prop 215 medical cannabis law, was originally an online directory designed to help users find medical dispensaries. Over time, as the cannabis legal landscape evolved and adult-use cannabis became more widely accepted in the U.S. and Canada, Weedmaps expanded its services to support emerging markets. Today, Weedmaps is one of the leading online marketplaces for cannabis consumers.
NuggMD has been at the forefront of online telemedicine for medical cannabis, helping patients connect with doctors and obtain the necessary authorizations for medical use. This partnership with Weedmaps marks an important step in integrating telemedicine with e-commerce to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience for patients.
